Panther Series tanks and German Radio Antenna

Post by BlackDragon »

Am I correct to assume that the company comander of the panther series tanks had three radio antennas on it. Why do they have three. Most command tanks only have two. If i have examined the books i saw pictures of them in the three antenas are as follows: as you look at the front pf the panter there is the standard radio antena behind the right side of the turret near engine grill, another on near the right side exhaust port, and one of them on the left side top of the turret. Are these locations correct.?. What do each of these radio antennas are correct?

My guess would be that one radio is for the platoon, one is for the company net, and one is for battalion net. Being the company commander, this tank would need extra radios for higher (battaion/divisional) command and possibly a radio for artillery, or for the panzergrenadiers, to coordinate attacks.

Black Dragon - Back to looking at pictures of German tanks. Standard Panthers had the antenna mount on the left side of the engine deck just behind the turret. The command and artillery support vehicles had another antenna on the right rear of the turret, and a star antenna mounted center rear on the engine deck. The star antenna was a replacement for the 'bedframe' antenna of early war vehicles. The tanks only had two radios, so I'm not sure why there were three antennae.
