1980's Royal Navy Colors (colours)

Gentlemen, what were the hull and deck colors of the RN during the early 80's/Falkland campaign?

SeaHarrier2006 will probably have good data on this, he's been building a very impressive Royal Navy collection including County class destroyers from that time period.

Also just realized this is the 25th Anniversary of the Falklands War this year.

Too bad GHQ isn't capitalizing on this with some 1/2400 scale ships and especially airplanes! (Hint, Hint)

If GHQ made the ships and planes for the Falklands War I would definitely buy them.

Hi Pete,

I have been building a Royal Navy fleet, that dates from the mid 1970's to modern day ships.

I can tell you that as far as I could find out there were no special Camoflage colours painted on the ships in the campagin. So with this in mind, I used the followinf colours for the paint jobs.

Humbrol No 147 which is a very light greay
Humbrol No. 33 Blackfor mast tops and a very thin water line.
Humbrol No.64 for the Decking of the ships
Humbrol No. 119 which is a meduim light brown for any of the decks that had wood on them, like the County Class Destroyers.
Also if you are painting them to Falklands colours, the helecopters at that time were a ver dark blue with a yellow nose ans around the top part of the helicopter.
For these I used Humbrol No.25 A dark Blue
Humbrol 153 for the yellow parts.

As for the Invincible I painted the ship the usual colours, but for the flight deck i used Humbro No. 64, because when i painted the flight deck any darker, it didn't look right.

As to where I got some of the ships.

The Invincible class from GHQ, as id the Type 42 Destroyers, Type 21 Frigates, and type 22 Frigates.

The County Class Destroyers can be bought from Alnavco at $5.95 for 2 ships, but you may have to ask the about availability. As can the Swiftsure class Hunter Killer Subs can also be bought from here for $5.50 for 5 subs.

Hermes can be bought from Viking Forge for $7.00, as can the Nuclear Hunter Killers of the Churchill class $4.00 for 3 subs. Remember the subs are painted black, so no special cre need be taken painting these.

I am unsure as to how good the Viking Forge casting are because I have never tried them so I would be interested as to your opinion on the should you get any.

Up to now I haven't found anyone who makes H.M.S. Fearless or rhe other Landing ships used, also as far as I can tell no one makes the Leander class frigates used in the campagin, so maybe someone at GHQ could talk to the modelers about making models of these vessles for us mear mortals.

I have a couple of Leander in 1/3000 but unless they're on "Independent Duty" the size difference really does matter.

No problem, I was glad you found the info helpful, The only thing I missed out was that because the helicopters were in a battle zone they would have been painted sea grey to help make them less visable to the enemy.
