Post by Zippy »

Did anybody here go to Salute in Vancouver, I could not go as i was working. :(
This is only about the 3rd time since Salute started that i missed it.
Talked to a freind who went and he said he played flames of war and that a lot of the rules were retarded.

Life is too short...Don't miss the next one! :)
talking about FoW. I got on their website ,looking at some of their products (Battlefront). I was shocked to see the size of some of those infantry weapons (small arms). I almost feel they are going the way of 40K,for their size...

The FOW minis are definitely proportioned like 40k guys: big heads, over-sized weapons, etc. It's the age old argument of what looks good on the table versus looking good on close inspection. The Battlefront tanks are pretty good though and I like their artillery and guns quite a bit.

The rules on the other hand, are pretty bleak. A lot of useless die rolling with little effect. You go/I go is also lame. I'm not a big fan of the rules, but then again, I prefer hex-based systems, so anything that requires a ruler is pretty much out :)

I have some of their older infantry which I think is not too bad. That new stuff, what happened???
As for my 15s I haven't used them in going on 3 years. I do plan to dig up a yard(don't know where yet,and use those Black&Decker laser range finders). I don't care for mowing the grass,so I just won't have any(in the back of course!). I prefer a battlefield anyways. So with these thoughts my 15s will see the light of day, literally!

I was at Salute in Vancouver, and we had a couple of interesting games. Troy Ritter came down and put on a Schwere Kompanie game, and someone else was running a Command Decision game as well. I ran a few space games with mixed attendance, but it was a decent con. I can't comment much on FOW, but having given the rules a good look over I can say they appeal far more to the 40k crowd than those wanting more realistic experiences.

I had a look at some of the Salute pre-Con stuff via a web-site Troy put up.

Did get a bit confused at first as there is a big games con in London each year also called Salute.

But is it true that there are 14 games clubs in Vancouver  ?

And that once a month there is a big games fest on a Friday night where there can me around 200+ people there?

If so then man, I gotta emigrate :D

There are indeed 14 "Clubs" in vancouver, though calling them clubs might be a bit generous. Each of them exists as a group of gamers with a specific focus. Some specifically do board games, others do 6mm age of reason, others do microarmor or flames of war, etc etc. On average I'd say each has about 4-8 people, with several people not affiliated with one club or another (like myself).

Each of these mini-clubs exists under the banner of the Trumpeter's Gaming Club, which is the overarching group that runs Vancouver Salute! and the friday night gaming nights. And yes, we do have a fairly large game fest where they rent out a ballroom and people bring in games to play. 200+ is a bit of an exaggeration, I'd say attendance usually is in the 110 ballpark, but it waxes and wanes depending on how things are going.

There's also one other large game club, the Vancouver Gaming Guild. They deal with RPGs and such, so I don't do much else with them, but they usually put on two smaller cons a year....

I did attend Salute 2007 this year and was pleased the 6mm crowd was out in full force. Friday night there were two 6mm micro-armor games (various rulesets) and Saturday there were three (including a Schwere Kompanie game I put on). A great con to be sure - well attended and door/painting/game prizes are generously sprinkled throughout the event. The hours are good too with games going on until after 12:00 am. If you can make it, the city of Vancouver has many other attractions as well.
