Modern Italian Vehicles

Post by chrisswim »

Speaking of Italians, has anyone come up with a good scratch build for the C-1 tank for Italy? My ideas are use Scotia chanllenger turrets (snip off the smoke launchers from the front of turret) and use a scotia M1 hull or someone elses' hull. Perhaps use some netting over the vehicle. Another option is us an old(very old) M1 from someone's (i do not know who it is, have about 15 or 20) turret and use that same hull, and put some net over the turret.

How about the Centauro? I use LAV hull and cinc F4 turret from french VBA 90 with the long barrel and snip of the very end of the barrel. This was my idea for the LAV-90 or 105 at one point was being discussed. Any other ideas?

Also, since we are on it, any idea on Italy's 6616 and 6614?

Chris,

The C-1 and Centauro are pretty hard in my opinion. They are very different from almost everything out there. I think you can do the C-1 turret using a Challenger turret as you suggest. And I think you can do the Centauro turret using the turret from a Scotia TAM but the hulls are another matter. For the C-1 to make it look right there will be a lot of filing down existing details and then re-etching new ones - or maybe your siggestion to cover it with netting or something will work. For the Centauro, a closer fit in terms of shape, but probably not size, is to cut up two VBC-90 to get one 8x8 vehicle. Pretty wasteful but the shape would be closer that using an LAV-25.

For the 6616 you could use the LAV-25 turret. Remove the smoke grenade launchers then file the front of the turret either side of the gun to make it more vertical. Snip of the back of the turret behind the hatches removing the stowage boxes. I think that will get you close. I'm tempted to try one but I'm already short a dozen LAV-25 turrets. For the hull use the tried and true M-706. With a little work around the driver's compartment and the rear end it could look convincing.

I don't have any advice on the Centauro or the C-1, but I've done a bunch of VCC-1 and VCC-2 APCs. There are many photos on my website, and I can get you more. Drop me an IM or an email if you want an in-depth discussion of how I did them.

Pat,

I went to your website to check out the Italians and the hyperlink seems to point to the Danish forces even though the title is Italy. Any chance of you explaining how to do the VCC-1 and VCC-2 here?

Paul

P.S. Sorry I missed the game Friday. The Wife got home from work at 7:00 and by the time I would have gotten out to Chantilly from Alexandria well I would have spent more time driving than playing. The good news is she felt really bad and promised to work around the next game night. :D Can we get an AAR from Friday?

I'll fix that link tonight; generally, I carved up some CinC M113A2s, and modified them extensively for the VCC-1. I did the same, along with add-on side plates and different hull arrangements for the VCC-2s.

PS Dave Luff took pictures, and extensive records were kept, so I'm hoping he'll write up an AAR. It was a Polish MR division against a Dutch brigade, the opening battle of the campaign. Next battle in the campaign is the evening of the 21st.
