Modern Micro-Armor: The Game (FO question)

Post by MTB »

In the above rules, paragraph 07.11.02 states: A FO STAND MUST HAVE A CLEAR LINE OF SIGHT TO A POTENTIAL TARGET DURING THE "PLOT PHASE". IF IT IS ELIMINATED AT ANY POINT DUIRNG THE "TURN", THE PLOT IS CANCELLED. (Page 12)

QUESTION: Does the FO have to continue to have a line-of-sight to the target even when the indirect fire arrives? The above rule implies that as long as the FO is not eliminated during the "turn" that it "plots" the fire, the taget does not need to be under continuous observation to direct that fire. Artillery may not arrive for several turns.

Thanks,
MTB

The answer is NO. So when you are plotting artillery the FO must have a clear line of sight to your target. If during the same turn as your plot the FO is eleminated then his fire mission is canceled. By being eleminated the process of calling and adjusting the fire was interupted. If at the end of the turn the FO has not been eliminated his call for fire is completed and he moves on to another target, even if it takes another turn or more for the fire to actually land.

Here is a real world example of how indirect artillery works written by the rules' author, John Fernandes. (A former Marine Corps Artillery Instructor)

Once registration fires by the "Base Piece" are complete i.e. "Battery adjust! Base-Piece, one round!", the next command is "fire for effect" i.e. "Battery... Three rounds, HE, in effect! At my command... Stand by... Fire!"

At this point the F.O.s attention should already be on establishing a solution for the next target. Once he does this. He will order, "Battery adjust! Base Piece, one round!", etc, etc. for the next fire mission.

"Battery adjust" means that although only one gun is firing, the rest of the battery adjusts their point of aim to match the base piece. Then, when the order to "fire for effect" comes all guns in the battery will already be aimed at the target.

There is no reason for the F.O. to look at the target while the shells are being fired, simply because there's nothing to see!

Only after the mission is complete and the smoke and dust clears, will the F.O. be able to ascertain whether the target was destroyed or whether an additonal application of C4 is required.

If he is satisfied that the fire was accurate, but feels more damage can be done. He will simply call, "Repeat!" and everybody will fire the same mission again, using the original data.
