Book: The Wolf (WWI Armed Freighter)

Post by Timothy OConnor »

Stayed up until 3 AM reading "The Wolf" by Richard Guilliat. An amazing book! Couldn't put it down!

It covers the exploits of a German armed freighter during WWI. Very well written, interesting period details, entertaining, and certainly a great source for naval scenarios, whether historical, fictional, or even sci-fi.

The fights in the book tend to be one-sided but I could see tweaking them for balanced gaming scenarios. In many cases the German armed freighters faced overwhelming odds against cruisers and destroyers. But sometimes the fight was more balanced against small patrol craft or even other armed freighters!

I won't give anything away but for fictional scenario purposes the destiny of one ship (not the Wolf) could serve as an interesting flashpoint setting off a war between major powers.

There are some slow points as the author describes political and even social aspects of the operations (eg the British and Australian press and governments hid the raiders' existence with dire consequences). But if you're interested in how military and commercial naval operations intersected in WWI and details of ship operations then this is the book for you!
