Your WWI Naval Book Recommendations?

Post by Timothy OConnor »

The only two period books I've read are "The Wolf" and "Castles of Steel". Have also bought "Dreadnought".

Besides these books and related Osprey titles does anyone have any recommendations for historical books covering circa-WWI naval combat?

Here are some titles on Jutland:
Jutland The German Perspective by V. E. Tarrant - Naval Institute Press
Jutland An ** CENSORED ** Of The Fighting by John Campbell - Conway Marine Press
Jutland 1916 by John Costello and Terry Hughes - Holt Rinehart Winston

For an overview, including the Dardanelles and the U-Boat campaign:
War At Sea 1914 - 45 by Bernard Ireland - Cassell's History of Warfare

I have other books about battleships of the era, but they are more of a design history as opposed to a detailed battle history.
Always respect the law of gross tonnage (aka "bigger boat wins")

Since you didn't indicate particular topics, here are some overall histories:

Naval Battles of the First World War - Geoffrey Bennett (available in PB)

A Naval History of World War I by Paul G. Halpern (harder to find, but Halpern is an excellent historian)

There are a number of downloadable, public domain PDF copies of books written around the time of the Great War on www.archive.org. You can search for specific battles, like Jutland, or Royal Navy or particular leaders.
