50mm Mortar DAK North Africa

Post by wolfman »

I am working on North Africa DAK infantry using GHQ figures. The DAK mortars look to be the 50mm Lt. mortars used very early and in second line Geman units. Is this correct? If so, those were squad weapons (i think) so how would one base these in the GHQ rules. They also dont appear to show up in the damage tables nor weapon tables (GHQ Micro Armor Rules) I am sure these could pass as the shortened 80mm but was curious if someone out there had some help for me. Someone have some damage and weapon table numbers they might suggest?

Thanks!

The 50mm mortar was issued at platoon level (I do believe) and therefore you wouldn't be able to base it if you're using the GHQ WWII rules. Reason being is that the GHQ rules are 1:5 scale, so 1 stand= 1 platoon and so forth. The damage for the 50mm is factored into the 'Infantry' stats in the HE column. But, if you do want to use them, then you could base it with an MG, or not, and use that stand as 'Infantry Support'.

Like Doug said.
Platoon level; 1 per. until phased out.
I don't have the AK set, but the photo in the web catalog does appear to be the 50mm.
There is a pic of a GHQ "short 81"model in the photo of the late war inf. weapons pack.
With no bipod & about a foot less barrel; I don't think I'd use it for a "stummelwerfer"...

From the GHQ rulebook; page 14, 10.0, "Support Stands"-
"represent groups of medium and heavy MG's and/or mortars of 60mm or less"
So if you use these rules, I'd say Doug's suggestion of pairing them with the MG's on support stands would be as good a way as any to get some use out of the castings.
Or just use them alone as more "support stands"-in the game there isn't any difference.

The Recce battalion motorcycle units were equipped with MG-34s and 50mm mortars. Their purpose was to supress the enemy position allowing the armored cars to break trhough.

That's one application.

Thanks for all your help!

I just bought a pack of motorcycles and planned to base them to match the DAK infantry so they can be "deployed".

Cant believe I missed the inf. support rule entry. What else did I miss? :)

I based the 50mms with the MGs on the infantry support stands along with an antitank rifle. Its pretty full but looks the infantry support part for sure. I will post some pics once I figure out how.
