Road Transition

Post by rommel58 »

Does anyone know a good way to transition from a dirt country road to a paved or stone road of a town or city?

No but I've wondering that as I plan some Normandy terrain.

I'll probably airbrush some light sand coloured paint on the road to represent dust from the vehicles.

Living in Australia I see lots of roads that go from tar sealed to dirt. The surprising thing is the rapid and relatively 'clean' transition; at 6mm a 'stippled' line across the road with the road colour would work fine the indicate the edge/start of the sealed surface. A dry bushing of the dirt colour over the start of the road surface (as suggested) is also appropriate. I can't speak of cobbles, though. Don't forget that you very rarely go from dirt to sealed, kerbed and guttered. The sealed road will also still have dirt along the sides. As the sealed road will shed all its water, the sides of the road usually have a decent sized drainage ditch, so possible to have water and reeds/grass and even small bushes, quite thick and close to the road. You 'might' go direct from dirt to sealed and guttered as the road enters/exits a small town as they only seal the road to keep dust down in the village.

Where I live at, there are signs that show paved to gravel and yeah...there is no slight transition at all. It does go straight from paved to gravel at the snap of a finger. I've done this in a few previous modern battles several years ago, sure throws a curve ball in players plans when paved gets them bonuses for movement to cross country :)
