Does anyone know any effective techniques for creating shell hole/impact craters?

Foam is good for craters ive tried it, its easy to carve them out with a hobby knife or some other tool then paint them brown and black and make them realistic if you want :)

Experience has demonstrated that several pounds of high-explosive packed into a steel shell and fired from a gun/howitzer is a highly effective technique in creating shell hole/impact craters.

Scupley/Femo, etc is great for making shell holes. It's also fast & durable as well. They can easily be decorated to look perfect on the table.
