W-47 lline Sdkfz 351 rocket launcher

Post by green beanie »

I am scratch building a Sdkfz 351 rocket laucher but came up with a problem. Which type of launcher would be good for the 1947 line? The side mounted 31 cm Stuka zu Fuss or the 15 cm panzerwerfer 40 MLR on top of an armoured roof? Your thoughts and comments please?

There is room for both types because they served different functions.

The 28-cm (high-explosive) and 32-cm (chemical incendiary) 'Stuka zum fuss' were short-range area weapons. Their launching racks could be hung from almost any vehicle. I don't think I would use a brand-new SdKfz 350-series chassis for this weapon, but it could have been done. More likely, if I wanted this weapon, I would mount it on old SdKfz 250-series half-tracks or captured enemy vehicles.

Rather than the 15-cm Nebelwerfer 40, I would use the later (longer-ranged) 21-cm Nebelwerfer 42. This had about four times the range of the earlier rockets and better (although not great) accuracy. For these, I think a SdKfz 351 with armored top would be a good carrier. You might also consider an unarmored mount based on the Raupenschlepper chassis.

The 15cm PzWf 42, 10 barrels on Maultier had a range of 6900m while the 21cm NbWf 42 was credited with a range of 7850m. However the 21cm launcher was a 5 barrel towed only and a special version had to be developed for vehicle mounting.

I do not think easy to mpunt the 21cm on vehicle as the rocket weighted about 3 times the 15 cm one. (112kg agaiinst 34) with all he relevant difficulty in reloading.

As fas as I know the 28/32cm rocket had a range of less than 2000m and were mounted on SdKfz 251. These were assigned to armored engineer unit.
