Anyone use Flames of War books with GHQ

Post by DAK »

I bought a few FOW books and found they have some pretty good info in them. I know they base this around items that they sale, but I'm not real thrilled about the tanks and infantry they put out. They are not as detailed as GHQ and I think GHQ infantry products are much better and you can have a much larger battle. Anyone else tried this?

Yep, I used the original version of 'Fortress Europe" for my late war GHQ German Battle Group. The game sucks (it doesn't reflect combat realistically IMO), but the background info is pretty good.

We hear from a lot of people who use our miniatures with FoW rules and books. That's fine with us. Our miniatures actually work better with their rules than their miniatures do. The much lower cost of GHQ miniatures is obvious, and the detail on our 1/285th is the same or better than the 15mm. Another point that is brought up all of the time is that a gaming table just doesn't look right when you have large scale tanks sitting a few inches apart and banging each other to death. That unrealistic "parking lot effect" just doesn't do it for a lot of people. Some people leave everything in the rules the same, and just use our miniatures. Many others will do things like leave everything the same, but double the firing range. Quite a few people have suggested that we come up with some type of a "conversion" card for using their rules with our miniatures. A company called Litko that makes a lot of gaming accessories actually makes some accessories for using GHQ miniatures with the FoW rules.

GHQ has been around a long time, and we are never too proud to acknowledge when someone has done something well. There is no doubt that the FoW paper products are visually stunning. The combination of GHQ miniatures and their rules and/or supplements works great for a lot of people.

I've played FOW with microarmour quite successfully by just using centimeters to match all of FOW's inch measurements. That allows you to play a game in a very small space, if you're stuck with a restricted gaming area.

I'm not personally enthralled with FOW as a set of combat simulation rules, but it does have its good points as long as you treat it as a game rather than as a realistic representation of battle.

Thanks for the feed back. Their newest book has rules for armored trains. Now I'm just waiting for GHQ to release those armored trains in 2012 Hint Hint!!.

Well since the biggest complaints most people have with the FOW rules is the ground scale which causes the parking lot effect I think using microarmour with the regular FOW measurements would look good. I have thought about using the Vietnam era rules with microarmour since I would not want to do it in larger scale.

Been browsing around looking at miniatures stuff today and stumbled across and AAR of someone who used FoW rules with microarmor and thought of this thread.

Flames of War with GHQ

Post by pmskaar »

While I don't yet use the Flames of War ruleset, I find the various supplements great for the organizational charts and the presentation - "eye candy".
I used to buy these as they came out but I have opted to wait for the consolidated books and get all the information in one book instead of three.
I might consider doing an actual Flames of War game sometime as a demo to get more people into micro armor. I still think that overall, GHQ models beat the 15mm scale for cost and accuracy.
