Rules

Post by fullmetaljacket »

Hello all

Mk 1 you got me thininking I was wondering what rules does the military use when doing wargames? Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I mean us gamers use all type of rules depending on era, playability etc etc... Just curious if the Miltary uses one standard set for all their wargaming needs? If so could they be used by regular joes(gamers) like us? OR is there sensitve material that we would not be privy to. Just thought anyone have thoughts?

I saw once a documentry on Pearl Harbor and they had military historians doing a what if scenario where the US fleet made it out and found the Japanese fleet. They where rolling d-10's but didnt see or hear of what rules they where using.

I think I saw the same show and believe they were using the Command at Sea rules made by Clash of Arms Games.

I think your right, Command at Sea. One of the gamers was Larry Bond if I remember correctly.

cool I use SK 5 when it comes to naval combat, since my group games WW 1 era naval mainly. SK 5 does cover WW 2 era also and good, just have jumped into the air combat yet which is what a lot of WW 2 era battles had in them.

Just curious if the military games use more statisrtics more than game mechanics. I have read some interesting articles on the subject and most say up front this is not a game simulator. It is a theory, and personal command response more than anything.

If ever you can make it to Dayton, spend a morning at the AF museum and an afternoon gaming, I'll introduce you to Fleet Action Imminent, the WW1 rules from GQ3. I also have Age of Dreadnoughts and Grand Fleets, but felt they were either over simplified or were missing things I wanted to play. I get as far as Indy from time to time, but only as far as New Castle on any regular basis to visit my mom.

I grew up in New Castle, my dad was a TV repair guy everyone knew, and my father in law owned New Castle Tire Store, so I was always Franks kid or Eddie's son-in-law. Headed to the Army in '74 and retired to Dayton in '95.

I'm preparing for the Drums game convention May 18/19 at Fort Meigs near Toledo for now, but I'd love to host something in June if that works. I have access to a couple of big tables at work and after the local game store closed, I started hosting games here on first and third Saturdays. I was a volunteer at the museum for 8 years so have lots of stories to tell about many of the exhibits, not to mention that many of them are listed in the Haunted Ohio books. I have a few hundred 1/6000 ships that I use, German, British, Turkish, Austro-Hungarian, Russian and US so far, so I can put a decent sized scenario together to quickly introduce players to the game system. I just ran a game at Cincycon a few weeks ago.

Anyway, looking forward to working out a visit and game.
