Modern American Civil War

Post by Stryker »

I am running 2 games at the What-Khan (formerly Rock Con) of Modern Armor during a modern day scenario on Friday, Nov 7th and then another on Saturday, Nov 8th. Civil War 2 in modern times with country being split by events and problems.
The scenario I am doing is the Republic of Texas (and its other supporting states) trying to secure another Bridge across the Mississippi River in the Midwest. The Midwest Federation is trying to keep the bridge open and in their control as it connects it's other states with a supply line.
The battle is called the Battle of I-280 Bridge and will be on the Iowa side.

A couple questions that I was hoping to get some suggestions for is color of the units. What would you suggest for the Republic of Texas?
What would you suggest for the Midwest Federation?

You're painting units specially for this?

Field blue and field grey come to mind, although which would go with whom I don't know. Republic probably blue, confederates grey.

If it's a marking on the bases...
oil well for Texas, potato for the mid west?

Yellow star for Texas (yellow rose), white star for the mid west?

Blue and red? Could be fun suggesting one side are communist...without actually saying it.

Another option for vehicle colours: sand for Texas and olive green for the mid west.
There is no right or wrong, only decisions and consequences.

I like your scenario idea
what states make up your Midwest Fed? what city is its capital?

BTW - biggest export crop of many 'central US states' seems to be Soybeans as of 2012.

As to colors I'd think that Olive drab, 'desert sand' or some sort of three tone camo would be 'natural' military colors no matter whose side the gear is on (i.e. Russia v. Ukraine now). Especially if its going to be former USA vs former USA gear that these 'nations' acquired from their local active army bases and army reserve depots.

Consider throwing a Cross on one side or the other's flag. Especially if more of Rep o' Texas members are former 'old south' and or bible belt states. I could see them doing that.

best regards,
Leif

IMO, Texas is the dustier/drier of the two factions, so I'd consider Desert MARPAT or Multicam for Texas. Although there's not much of a Marine Corps presence in Texas so their use of USMC gear/patterns/colors/etc. would be a little odd.

To avoid confusion/fratricide, the Midwest might be wearing Woodland MARPAT, but solid OD Green is just as likely/believable. Especially if this is the "Big Government/Loyalist/Statist" faction. The US's increasingly-militarized law enforcement agencies are often wearing OD green or woodland MARPAT so this would provide some continuity/verisimilitude.

Interesting scenario. Since both sides will be fielding similar equipment will you require both sides to do a friend or foe identifier? Would be difficult at night when thermals are being used.

A couple of ideas on this topic.

First, I just saw an article on Google+ where a group of folks in the "Red" states want to expel the "Blue" states from the Union. Not going into the politics of this but it might make for an interesting variant on the game in this topic.

Second, for Texas camouflage schemes have you considered something out of the Bass Pro Shop catalog? Enough folks in Texas already have these so it wouldn't be much of a jump for them.

The Midwest Federation is made up of Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, North and South Dakota. Illinois would be the main state with Rockford as the Capital.

Had 2 games run with Friday night having the Midwest Federation being in great control and wiping out wave after wave of attacks and doing a great defense to hold the bridge from being taken.

On Saturday the tide was turned and Defense was dwindled down by each wave but at the end they didn't get to the bridge but were well on their way.

Great time and had some great players and great input to make the game even better the next time.

Went with a camouflage for the Midwest Federation and a Darker Sand color for the Republic of Texas.

Looking forward to doing this again at the next Con I can get to.

Geeze! I was there all three days, sorry I didn't locate you. But I did put on games all three days too; Fri & Sun I put on Kommerscheidt/Schmidt scenario, 15mm, and Sat we did a 15mm Sci-Fi...

The biggest thing is at conventions I don't want to spend a lot of time setting up or making an elaborate table that people will see it costs them too much time and money to play this. I want it to look nice but simple that anyone can do. I want to add different tapes for roads as suggested to me and also some signs on the overpass and around it.
