The boxes I use have locking tabs. So if you drop it some models may shake loose and you may spend an hour sorting turrets, but everything will stay in the box.

In fact when we moved from Cincinnati back to IL the movers put all of my Flames of War boxes in the truck ON EDGE despite labels and arrows and fragile stickers. I was ready to murder someone. But after a close inspection, the damage was limited to two infantry bases having figures popped off, and a few minor chips here and there.

It helps that I give my models 3 good coats of dull coat....

This is an interesting thread because I always enjoy seeing what other people do. I don't think they will ever be a one size fits all answer for this problem so you'll just have to evaluate your situation a decide what comes closest to the 90% solution for you.

Having enjoyed the benefits of a life in the military for the past 20+ years I learn to accept some of the negative aspects such as moving every two years or so. In fact I'm two weeks away from another pack out for another inter-continental move (fourth since 2011). What I have found works best for me are the Panzer-Keepers and Footlockers from I-94 Enterprises. The individual boxes are then stacked within large Rubbermaid bins.

Contract movers will do some very creative things with your personal effects to load the crates for shipment, regardless of arrows or labels. [I once watched in horror as they folded my friend's non-folding kayak to get it into a crate. And never, never, ask my wife about how much our turn of the last century piano weighs] Back on topic the internal foam sheets in these boxes have always been more than adequate protection for my models in any of those moves.

Ray I feel your pain. I have had that happen to me as well. I now use a flat rubber band around each of the boxes to prevent a repeat performance. One could argue that something like that shouldn't be necessary and there is probably some truth to that. On balance though it is the best system I've found for my particular needs. Perhaps if I stop moving someday I'll decide to change systems. Another benefit to using the rubber bands is when I have stacks of boxes at my work area the rubber bands prevent accidental bumping from sending them crashing to the table or floor.

Fair enough. I've reposted my post in Braille. If you can't read it adjust your display size until you can feel the bumps on your screen. Pictures of my storage system will follow in a few hours.

Edit:

Here are the basic boxes from I-94 (google it for details). I use the Panzer - Keepers and Mothball A and B. I've tried the Footlocker but it was too bulky for my tatste.

Here is the Panzer Keeper with slots for vehicles.

Here is the Mothball with solid foam. (1/6000 Modern US ships)

Here are some of the boxes with a custom label. I have a Word document template where I can insert the contents and national flags/ensigns for each box. Works great for task organizing boxes like a combat command.

Then I pack it all in a big plastic box organized by type, micro armor, micronauts etc.

Like I said I move pretty frequently and this system has worked very well for me for years. Movers just wrap packing tape around the lid of the big plastic box to ensure it doesn't pop off and everything is fine. The individual boxes are packed in densely enough that they don't move around very much at all. I sometimes get 1 or 2 broken boxes from getting smacked through the side or bottom of the big plastic box but overall its usually a smooth move.

Awesome, I love the custom labels! I appreciate your listening to my plea of ignorance and including photos.

Allen Rockwell's stackable storage trays are the best! I have the double-wide and tall box on the bottom holding terrain and 8 of the regular trays stacked on that. Great way to move stuff to a fellow gamer's house and nice tidy storage at home too! I need many more of these trays though.....a lot of nice painted micro armor needs a better home.

Hi guys

Here what I use at the moment. A4 (letter) sized plastic stationery boxes about 30mm high and lined with magnetic sheet. All my vehicles are based on thin steel or steel paper. It is good because they dont slide around and can survive some tipping of the box.

It works well but I am finding it hard to source the boxes so I will be switching to wooden trays that fit into a larger box. It also gives me a chance to practice making some wooden boxes.

Also I am thinking about not basing my vehicles anymore, so I will go back to foam inserts again and scrap the steel/magnetic basing!

Cheers
Kieran
