I've been working on some villages for a Seven Years War game, but they have a lot of uses. Up next they'll stand in for small tons in my upcoming Flames of War game with lots of micro armor!
The buildings were free paper downloads. I shrank them down to about 1/600 or 3mm in order to get more buildings per town area. The bases are 4" beer coasters liberated from a friendly neighborhood pub. I'll add sand, flock and grass to finish them off.
I'm also making "hollow box" towns so they can be occupied by troops.

That all depends on your ground scale. If I'm playing a game like Flames of War, I'd keep them at original size and make the interiors accessible (just don't glue on the roof!).
Now if I'm playing a game more like Command Decision, then I prefer to shrink my buildings down, so my villages are not just one building. I know some gamers hate to have figures and buildings not match, but I hate to see a "town" made up of two houses and an outhouse. These were made for my Seven Years War game where 1"=100 yards but I'd use them for anything down to 1"=40 yards or more....
