Battle Report

Post by SKeeM »

Okay so I had a chance to try the Stopping the Red Tide supplement for Flames of War last night with my brother. He is not a hard core gamer but he helped out so I could see how well the rules worked out. These rules are by no means a realistic set of rules and can never be considered a simulation. But they are fast and fun and good enough to feel like fair representation is being played out. I will make several post for the turns. My brother took control of two Russian tank companies with 10 T80's and 1 BMP made up of 3 platoons with the 1ic and 2ic. He also had a scout platoon with 3 BMP's and a SPA platoon of 3 152's.(proxy). hade a company of 14 M1A1's with a mech platoon of 4 Bradley IFV's, a M109 section (proxy), a ITV section and a scout section. We played a mission called no retreat and he was the attacker.
This is what the table looked like.

It is a 6X4 table.
You can see the objectives.

Deployment.
I had to deploy first and keep half my army in reserve.(sucks!) So that means 4 platoons in reserve and 3 on the table. I chose 2 tank platoons with the mech platoon and the 1 and 2 ic's. I got to put 1 platoon in ambush so I choose a tank platoon with the 1ic. (5 tanks).
He deployed everything.

Turn 1.
He rushes up only to find out he cant kill M1's head on with cannon fire. I should note the the T80 is considered a fast tank and can move 16 inches a turn. That reall makes up for the lack of fire power. if used properly. I hit with many shots but my brother rolled incredibly well. He needed 5 ups to save and he made most of them.

Turn 2.
This is where I think he made his biggest mistake. He should have used his speed to get behind me and get all flank and rear shots. But he decided to risk staying stationary to fire his missiles because they have a greater anti armor rating and he called in some arty. It paid off for him. The arty hurt a lot and he got lucky with the missiles. Ahain my rolls sucked and he was killing me.

I popped my ambush here is the woodline which gave me 10 tanks there.

Turn 3.
Being he was so successful with the missiles he decided to stay and fire them again with the arty and send a tank platoon around the hill to flank me. The I opened with my Bradley's for 1 kill plus a few more from the tanks. I could not get any reserves in yet. That's what I hate about reserves but I have to admit it does make the game interesting.

Turn 4.
The game started to get very bloody! I got my arty in and a tank platoon. He still stayed firing his missiles and arty. The tank platoon from reserves came in and killed a few of his out flanking tanks but for the most part I was getting hurt on the front line. More than him. He was still rolling 5's and 6's for saves and I rolled so many 1's  My Bradley's failed their morale test and bounced!

Turn 5.
We fought to a standstill. My arty came in hard and what I had left hit hard but both forces were depleted at this point. Both armies were still on the table with no one being pushed to a morale test but he didn't have anything left to push with. American victory!

Over all I thought the rules played well, I had fun and that's all that matters. MY brother had fun also and wants to play again and that means more people to play with 8) So basically we played just over 3000 points in two and a half hours, pretty good considering we had to look stuff up. I think we could play 5000 points in three hours and have a lot of fun.

I have looked once or twice at gaming moderns but never found a rules set that was the right "speed" for me. I downloaded these as well and I think I may end up building a few small armies eventually....need to finish up my WW2 forces first....

Nice looking game. Fun is the point after all!
