I like to use a material called Taskboard. It can actually be bent when wet and dries in shape...but I find it is a great material to apply putty, glue and other stuff to. I have been using the Vallejo gels for texture and color and to hide the infantry bases. It cuts easily with an exacto and can be purchased in sheets of varying thickness. I cut it to fit 3/4" x 1/2" bases for my micro armor infantry (based for Command Decision). I use longer bases for tanks to preserve barrels. I mount these bases on pre-cut metal bases and store them in magnetic sheet lined boxes. Pencil boxes are perfect. I will try to upload some pics later of the South Africans and communist opposition forces I have been working on.
The Taskboard is also very good for naval bases. It has some texture on its own, so you could simply paint blue and drybrush white. However, I like using the Vallejo gels for the water color and effects.
