Buying Habits

Post by sneaky pete »

Just curious what are the buying habits of the forum members. Do you buy as needed for a game / tournament? Wait for the good deal and buy in bulk? One or two packs at a time? Buy the whole army?

I find myself in the latter category of buying a whole unit I want, usually waiting for the sale to further entice me.

Any thoughts?

I order in £100 batches when there's enough stuff that I want that adds up to that total.

I typically make all my purchases around the time of big discounts. These purchases typically area about $160 or more. My purchases, that occur outside of a sale, tend to be much smaller and closer to about $50 or less. Unless I get a bonus or something at work and then I could make a big purchase with not sale price as well.

As for the content of my purchases, they tend to center around vehicles I think are cool and trying to round out a organized unit of vehicles I already own. My purchases are kind of all over the place.

Since my current gaming group has lost interest in 1/285th scale and moved toward 1/600, I have not been motivated to make purchases centered around an entire formation. Hopefully, in the future, I will be able to find a group that likes 1/285th so I can get some of my vehicles into action.

I buy what I need when I can afford it - two kids in college. Since I collect units, I prioritize buying in accordance with the status of my units. For instance, I'm only 1/3 way to the tank strength of my M103 battalion, I need more 3 US mech infantry battalions - 1 H-series and 2 J-series, and I'm half way through the first J-series one. At the moment, two wheeled battalions are subbing for them. I also am forming more cavalry units, building a couple M60A1 battalions, and need to build up the French and German battalions. I want to construct a German panzergrenadier battalion, but must decide whether it will be the 1970s version or the latter, 4-company unit. In addition, I want its combat support units and an artillery battery. I also look at things like the needed support vehicles - most don't have requisite recovery vehicles. The priority is making sure all units have their M577s, scout platoon, mortar platoon, and medical platoon. It is a complex problem which sometimes gets sidetracked by emotion, or someone coming along with M60A2s or old M551s on offer, which I feel obligated to respond to right away. I also feel I need to build mech units beyond the division TOE to enable me to fulfill the infantry mission, which, after all, is the most important.

I find the objective of creating units offers some structure to acquisition. The only problem is my real-world budget.

I buy a few things at a time with most orders for $30-50. These are not what I need but when I would like something to paint. Because I am pretty well house bound hecause of my disability, 3 major back surgeries in 18 months, it gives me something to do.
I have always enjoyed great service from GHQ.

I also order what I can afford. I have three immediate goals and that is to finish a 1:1 modern American, German and Russian division. The US is done except helicopters and the Germans are close as well. The Russians still have stuff needed so that has been my focus. Usually order around $50 dollars worth at a time since I still have some inventory to paint and really need to strip some others and repaint.
