Marine Artillery in Korea

Post by tomc300 »

Ok, guys I am trying to find out which particular guns the USMC used in Korea. I have photos that indicate they were still using m101a1 105mm medium arty.
What about heavy artillery? Were they using the m1 155mm?
Did the marines ever receive Longtom 155's?

*edit* I meant to write m101a1, don't know where m2a1 came from.

Well, that's what I get for playing ultra modern too long. Totally slipped my 56yr old brain that m101a1 was a post war redesignation of the m2a1. Damn. I need a vacation.

There is a thread maybe a page or two ago that covered this. The long & short of it seems to be the Marines acquired everything the Army had at the end of WWII in the Pacific. When the Marines arrived in South Korea at the start all the Army troops saw was their old equipment fully equipping Marine units.

*****Never mind. I found it but it was part of your earlier thread. Sorry for the interruption of your current search.*****

I don't have any references for the Korean War, but I thought maybe a search for information on the 11th Marine Regiment would turn something up. I haven't found anything like a TO&E, but I did find this document that is pretty amazing. It appears to e a log from 4th Battalion / 11th Marines in Korea, which would normally be the 1st Marine Division's GS artillery battalion. Pretty interesting to see the day-to-day activity of the battalion.

Stupidity must run in my family. After reading Brigade Commander's post, I remembered posting on here when I first started this project and before a car wreck and move across state. The best reason I have for not answering my own question is that part of my Osprey collection including the Inchon campaign book disappeared in the move. Most likely mistaken for a box of paper backs for donation. I did however locate an excellent series of books in the USMC archives,
and am happily working on my scenario driven campaign now. I apologize for the duplicate questions, but between the stress of dealing with my back injury in the wreck and moving I totally forgot I had already addressed this. Lol.

Hope you recover fully and as soon as possible. It's cool you're setting up a campaign. Definitely post action reports.
