M60 Family

Not sure if a thread dedicated exclusively to the legendary M60 tank. GHQ has so many versions available, maybe its time to give it a home of its own. I start this effort with the the start of my M60 Sabra project. Redleg has repeatedly requested I post something, so here it is. My base coated M60 Sabra. They will soon be joined by a platoon of M60A3s that I had lying around with no home. I think I captured the correct base coat color. Please let me know what your thoughts are.

I think the color looks great. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress on your Sabras!

I LOVE to see tanks precisely lined up in a motor pool!!! I expect more. PARTICULARLY US tanks and EVEN MORE particularly M60-series US livery tanks, so... You KNOW what you gotta do!

I have two companies of US M60A3s in Desert Sand. One company has reactive armor and the other is with out. I just pulled them out to search for my Unpainted M60A3s and was shocked to see some issues with the paint Job. Either I did not realize that they were that bad or some how they faded or something.. I am going to try and touch them up... if that does not work, its into the stripper pool to be cleaned and ready for repaint... Really hope that is not the case. I have done far too much paint stripping as of late.

What do you use to strip paint?

I'm sure there are far stronger and quicker working paint removers, but I am currently using LAs Totally Awesome. It's a chemical cleaner if diluted. Depending on the type of paint and amount of layers, both acrylics and enamels come off pretty quick. I think most cases, about a week or so for acrylics and over 2 weeks for enamels. Lacquers take a little longer, at about 3 to 4 weeks .. .I tend to forget there in there so I am not 100 percent sure on minimum times. Now, with that said, there is sometimes some paint in a tight crevis, but it comes out easy if picked at with a needle or exacto knife.

I'm going to jump on the M60 bandwagon and post some pics of my M60s. These are all decent by my mediocre standards, but I painted them when I was afraid to try washes and dry brushing.

This thread is motivating me to spruce them up a bit. I'll repost after they receive an upgrade at the JTF-P paint shop.

It is great to see everyone's M-60 series of tanks here. Begemot, your MASSTER and MERDC schemes are excellently rendered, especially at this small scale.

As an aside, I served on M-60A1s and M-60A3s during my Army career. I love seeing this tank.

Begemot, that's great work. The MASSTER is harder to do than it looks. CavDog, I like that OD.

Hoth, as far as I know, the US Army did not use M60A3s with add-in armor. The Marines DID use add-on armor on their M60A1s. We have a bit of a dilemma, since GHQ put the add-on armor on their M60A3. You'll have to come up with some sort of fiction in your mind to find a place for your M60A3s with AoA. I have a battalion of the things and I waffle back and forth about whether it's an Army or Marine battalion, mostly leaning toward Marine. I really need more Marine infantry, but don't want to add an AAVP battalion when I'm HOPING I can spend the money on a new ACV battalion. My current Marine establishment is an LAV battalion, which doesn't really justify a whole tank battalion, but an armor asset is an armor asset. I intend to have an ACV battalion, even though, having no oceans in my AO, only rivers, it's hard to justify. Two division's worth of M113s means I can get across any rivers I need to, so don't really NEED Marines, but an ACV-mounted battalion would be a get-across-quick force to establish a bridgehead and the Army V150 bn can work with it. The Stryker brigade can't do the quick river crossing like ACVs could. Anyway, my Marines are poor. They didn't get M1A1s to replace their M60A1(AoA)s and had to make do with M60A3 replacements and they took the plates off the A1s and put them on the A3s. Sorry, I guess you got an essay.
