This paper provides really good info on missions and organizations of battalion scout platoons. It also compares them to their divisional and ACR brethren.
There is great to&e data in the back showing the makeup of the scout platoons from WWII through 1989 when it was written.

Tactics are the opinion of the senior officer present.

redleg,
Thanks for the link and the Field Manual references. I am slowly building up my reference material that I used to build my units. Thanks to everyone that have given me tons of great information.
What year did they kill the ACRs? Just curious. I am still going to build mine with a mix of more modern equipment. Just would like to know the years they existed if I want to build a few that are right for a certain time period.

I'm not sure when the last ACR died, but I'm thinking that I will probably be spending my Friday night looking for an answer now! (Go to the club? No thanks, I'm researching armored cavalry regiments on the internet tonight!)
When I left Fort Carson in 2001, 3rd ACR was still there and I'm pretty sure that 2nd ACR had already converted to the Light Cavalry Regiment thing. I want to say that 3rd ACR was still an ACR when they deployed to Iraq in 2004 or 2005, but not 100% certain.
Keep us up to date as you build your unit! Pics are always welcome!

Cavdog, that was certainly a reference I needed! And as it happened, the author and I were lieutenants together in A/1-32 Armor!
All blessings flow from a good mission statement.

Redleg,
As requested, here is a quick pick of my ACR squadron. It represents all I have so far. I am missing some Bradley's, M109 Paladins, and support trucks. Not much though I am really close to having every thing I need. Sorry for the picture quality, I did this on the fly to get something up there. I will take some better pictures soon.
If I ever need to get this force into the field, I do have a company of M2A3 Bradley's in the motor pool that could fill in.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I have to admit that Redleg's posts have inspired me to make some more headway on my ACR. That and a recent lucky break I got with a couple of packs of M1s that enabled me to pull together the M1 company. Also, special thanks to Paul (from Florida and this site), who helped me out with a single Linebacker to finish out my air defense.
Got to work on the infantry. I bought a pack and probably have enough to put together what I need.. just been a little hesitant to do so. Need to quit being scared and pull the trigger.
While I am on that subject, does the M1 company have any command tracks attached to it?
The nice thing about building an ACR squadron, is it gives you enough vehicles to field all kinds of units. Example, I can almost field tthree full companies of bradley's and two full company of M1s. plus I would have all the support units. So its of dual benefit to build the squadron. This approach makes good economic sense for me. I will probably never have the grand collections that a lot of people on this site have. My need for having units from other nations and time periods makes that difficult. Plus I am not sure the finance minister would increase the current budget.
My favorite part of an ACR, combat strength they bring to bear on the battle field. plus they look good on the parade field. LOL.
Promise more pictures in the future. Thanks again.

For some reason I was thinking that the last ACR converted to Strykers when the combined arms battalions first debuted, but apparently it wasn't until 2011. Here is an article about 3rd ACR converting from armored to Stryker: https://www.army.mil/article/70060/3rd_ ... anges_name
The tank company does not have a command track or mortars. I think it's because of the cav troop mission of operating more dispersed than the tank company, but I'm going to dig through the manual to verify that. I'm an artillery guy after all - I've never been a real cav guy!
I agree with you about the flexibility of a cav squadron! A full cav squadron has 41 tanks and 41 bradleys. My 1st squadron is a US unit, but when I'm in imagi-nation mode that is the ROD's 5th tank battalion ad 7th infantry battalion!

3rd ACR was converted to a Stryker brigade 16Nov 2011. It was the he last to go.
2nd ACR was redesignated in 2005. I don't know what it really is, but some kind of Stryker reconnaissance outfit, if speed bump is a kind of outfit.
11th ACR has been doing necessary things since the end of the Cold War not as an ACR.

Wow.. so then Nov 16th is a day of morning for me.
. Thanks Redleg and Panzergaotor for the info. Wonder why they thought getting rid of the ACR in its entirety was a good idea. It was so devastating in the Gulf. I understand the need for lighter unit structures because of the lower intensity conflict that seems more prevalent. However I feel as though it would be beneficial to have it still around.
Redleg,
maybe you can help me with something else. I was looking through some Calvary regiment stuff I found on the internet a while back. I believe it was a field manual. Sadly, I can't seem to find it now. The only thing I remember in it, and maybe this will help someone to point me in the right direction, is that it had a light and heavy Anti tank unit. The light, if I remember right was all humvees with TOWs and the heavy was AT strykers and MGS.. I want to say 12 and nine respectively. Do you, or anyone else for that matter, know of a document that has this in it?
Anywho, thanks for the info on when they disbanded. I might have to go have a beer over that one.

Redleg,
I guess since my ACR does not exist in the real world and probably not with some of the vehicles combinations I am using, that its the start of an imagination.. LOL.
While I got you here, what fabric do you use for your grass. I have been wanting to get some turf to take pictures of my vehicles. Looks better than the hobby surface.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
