The Italians had a pretty simple numbering system for their tanks which relied on a colored block with stripes and roman numerals.

I'll go into greater depth if someone wants, but not now, I'm supposed to be working.
I wish I had something witty to say...

I know, most of the time, by equipment type and tactical symbols and numbers

The rest of the time ... well that's the fog of war

Anyhow, examples:

My British armour conforms to the regimental hierarchy within each brigade, and get the appropriately coloured tactical symbols (I even have a combined regiment, 4th/8th Hussars, which has Honeys marked with different coloured tactical symbols for just one of the squadrons).

German armour is a bit easier since the only unit where this will be slightly problematic is 5th Panzer Regiment, where both battalions have the same equipment (all the other armoured units are smaller and equipped with things like Tiger Is/PzIIIs or Stug III). These two bns will only be differentiated by turret numbers (1 model per platoon). But the first battalion is still in blisters, so this hasn't arisen yet, and in any case I'm not sure that both bns will make it on to the table at the same time.

I differentiate my infantry units in the following ways:

British motor bns have CMP 15cwt and 3 ton, my Guards motor bns have Bedford QLDs and Morris 15cwts, and infantry bns will get Bedford OXD and OYD trucks (next year),

German Panzer Grenadiers are a bit easier, one bn in half tracks (not strictly historically accurate, I know, but makes a useful difference), one in trucks and a machine gun bn equipped completely differently to the former two. These are suported by a composite Fallschirmjäger bn – easy to differentiate.

HQs, FAOs and FACs all get based separately, with their associated vehicles unbased.

Finally, all the based figures and artillery units are labelled on the underside.

Nevertheless, I'm thinking about making some game markers for the main formations and their subordinate units.
