Sorry I think I misunderstood your question. Or maybe I was just looking for an excuse to talk about artillery!

I think that FA generally operated as you described up until Paladin was fielded (I think - I didn't go on active duty until '97). Paladin allows the guns to fire accurate converged sheafs while being greatly dispersed. The constraint is usually how much terrain each platoon is alloted to operate in. IIRC Paladin doctrine calls for a square k for each firing platoon, but there is never enough real estate for that to happen.
