We play with all rules and distances the same, accept command distance. Reducing the values to centimeters on your tape for command distance while using inches for everything else gives the models about the correct spacing. You then also have to reduce your artillery marker size. I bought one from Litko who make a specially resized artillery marker for FOW 6mm. I also use their bases for the figures though you could make your own with cardboard. Be prepared for more disputes over concealed or not concealed as the smaller figures are harder to judge. We sometimes have to resort to a dice roll i.e. 1-3 concealed 4-6 not concealed to keep the game moving. Other than that I feel the game looks more realistic so have armies in 6mm and 15mm. GHQ's free building downloads are also terrific for gaming around.

I've been playing FoW rules with GHQ models for years. I've even converted a couple friends. Once they got their heads out of the FoW "box", they realized that the games look better, the models are a fraction of the cost of the big ones, and the space that you need for a game and storage is a fraction too. Now they are even open to trying some other rules! The hard part is getting them to look at it with an open mind- once that happens they run with it on their own and can't believe that they didn't see it sooner. The Litko stuff is really nice too, and works nice for the conversion. We use centimeters for the inches in the rules, and double the firing range. This keeps us from having a parking lot full of tanks pounding the crap out of each other from a couple inches away. Does anyone else do this? How do you do it? Are there other things that you change? I think that the FoW rules are an easy way to get started, but you quickly see some things that don't add up.

I have really seen what you describe as a general reluctance to try anything that does not come as a boxed rule set. The regulars at the Local play FoW, SAGA and Bolt Action on a pretty regular basis, but are completely loathed to try anything that we grognards play. Its as if they don't trust that'll we'll let them in on all the secret bonus rules that are in the latest rule book. Almost all of the folks play GW rules so they have been brought up on this sense that you win games by building the killer army and exploiting some esoteric rule on your opponent. The concept of reading an actual book or biography would be a total waste of time. What kind of a rule system would want to use historical activities to base its system upon? Crazy! And the idea that real world tactics have a place in a game is just something that makes no sense to them. And boy, do I get looks of utter confusion when I put on a totally lop-sided game with terrain that is not just scattered about in some un worldly pattern.
Nevertheless, we gamely attempt to get newbies involved in our games. Its just part of the battle against the Tyranny of the Codex Savants.

When I first posted the fact that I had returned to the GHQ fold I did not realize all the responses that it would get. Right now I have been redoing all my old hexes, they are not quite right so I have run them through my table saw to make sure they are all four inches across. When this is complete I will rebase everything and fill in the models I need to complete my units, I live alone in the mountains so I play alone, which means I can choose either FOW or Micro-squad. One thing about this is , as some of you have said, it is as much fun to research and build as it is to game.

Yes I have set up and played against myself before. It's a bit hard to plan some sneaky cunning moves but the opponent doesn't usually mind if I've done something stupid and want to redo my move...........
