Novice painter question

Post by Hoth_902 »

Great Job Begemot, just to be clear, was that all done by hand? I have some vehicles that i want to camouflage but was unsure the best way to go about it. I have hand painted some camo but was concerned that it would be too thick and loose some detail. Did you thin the paint at all or strait from the bottle? The thought of attempting camo with an airbrush scares me and I am having trouble believing this type of pattern would be possible any way other than by hand.

Hoth_902:

I painted these by hand and the primary reason is because I know I couldn't do it with an airbrush. I use oils because they don't dry quickly, which is the virtue and vice of acrylics. Of course, it is the opposite for oils but I like that because the extended drying time gives me more control over the painting process.

So when I painted this camo pattern I first painted the brown base color using about three very thin layers, letting the paint dry between layers. Once this was done I applied the green pattern, again using a thin layer. After applying the green paint I then very gently feathered the green are edges with a dry soft sable brush. This softens the edges and makes it look like it was sprayed on. Once the green paint had dried I used this same method for the sand color. The black accents were put on last, after the sand color had dried, but I didn't soften these as they have hard edges.

The trick is really keeping the paint wet and workable so you can brush the pattern edges to make the pattern look like it has be sprayed on. It also allows you clean up a painting mistake with turpentine and start over if you need to. I use oils but you can achieve the same effect with enamels. PMSkaar is using Humbrols this way for his more recent German vehicles, an example is the German Pak 44 128mm - Deployed in the catalog.

Well these are the best painted GHQ models I could find that I already have a picture of!

I got carried away and painted all the markings except the stars on these.

This is a nice photo from the same army.

I use oil paints and mix the colors from a fairly limited palette to get the colors needed, so I can't provide a list of commercial hobby colors. I don't use an air brush. I favor a pin type black wash for the models and I like to apply a dust coat with a large soft sable round to finish them off and give the vehicles a slightly in use look.
Hands down, these are the best and most accurate MERDC painted vehicles I have ever seen.

VERY WELL DONE!

Why, in my day, we didn't have counters. We had to paint the unit values onto little rocks. maps?! Hah! We had no paper maps! We put our rocks in the dirt. It sucked when it rained, but we soldiered on!!! Don't get me started on dice...

Great idea for a thread, really lovely work everyone! That MERDEC scheme is crazy good...

I guess I like the look of my Strykers the best (mostly because the GHQ model is so excellent on its own).
