Wiki says it WAS to reassure Europe, but we were also reassuring ourselves that we weren't going to hang USAREUR out to dry. As a platoon leader "thickening the covering force, I didnt pay much attention to the logistics of it because I didn't think it would matter much to me. On subsequent tours in US and Germany, and with a secondary MOS in logistics. It got A LOT more interesting. I did a Reserve IMA tour after leaving active duty in the ops office at USAREUR HQ. On the night shift, part of my job wad to prepare a briefing map showing progress of units from staging port to assembly areas. An amazing, complicated process. At any rate, I think we needed to demonstrate to ourselves that it could be done.
I must admit, one of the most enjoyable parts of Rick Atkinson's WWII trilogy is when he talks logistics. It is too bad there isn't a wargame gor D-Day or Desert Storm or Iraqi Freedom logistics.

All blessings flow from a good mission statement.
