The nails elevate the vehicle about an inch off the surface of the 2x4 so you get all-round coverage and no paint "shadowing" - places where features on the model shade areas from paint spray. A row of nails in a 2x4 means you can paint multiple vehicles each pass.

As a diabetic, i get the eye problems, along with several other complications, so I get your difficulty.

Oh, the flathead roofing nails are wide enough to secure the vehicle between the tracks and hold it on while you move the 2x4 from setup to spray area and change angles a little.
