The KDF are on the way.

Parachute Platoon: 1st PLT, Recon Company, 7th (Northland) Brigade.
Infantry Platoon: 2nd PLT, 7th (Infantry) Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Brigade.
Tank Platoon: 2nd PLT, 9th (Light Tank) Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Brigade.
Howitzer Battery: 1st Battery, 7th Armoured Howitzer Battalion, 7th Brigade.

The Recce Platoon want to know if they can jump with their snowmobiles?
Also the Infantry would normally be in their snow cats, should they bring them or just their ski's?

KDF is ready for the Infantry tug-of-war! Jumping in their snowmobiles.
Those same guys are able to swim the 1500 meters just inside the Arctic Circle under 20 minutes, too.
Those guys are tough … really tough!

Welcome to the first annual Arctic Training event here in Yellowknife NWT. The Arctic can be a very cold and inhospitable place for any military unit to operate in, which is the reason why this event exists to help units on how to operate in arctic conditions. let’s began this event with some target shooting today in the White out shooting course. Your score will be based on how accurate you are in the face of a blinding snowstorm.

Heat 1 this morning will be with your Artillery battery’s on the course.

Followed by Heat 2 with the infantry platoons in the afternoon.

Then lastly Heat 3 in the evening with the Vehicle unit.

1st Battery, 7th Armoured Howitzer Battalion, 7th Brigade.

Image

On the right six ZAM-155 SPH.
Left from bottom to top, ZAM-CP, ZAM-MRT, Bv206 Locating Radar, ZAM-FO and 2x ammo carriers.

The Battalion should have been re-equipped with the new K-9 SPH by now but so far only the 3rd Armoured Brigade is operating the type.
Due to sanctions, only 16 have made it to the KDF and the program is on hold.
The old ZAM-155 are a 30 year old design but still work after a mid life upgrade. It is based on the old ZAM family of armoured vehicles made in Karmanaskis.
They include APC, IFV, ARV, AT, AD, Command, Ambulance and many other. The ZAM series is to be replaced by the all new Redneck system just starting to come in to service.

2nd PLT, 7th (Infantry) Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Brigade.

Platoon ride in Armoured snow cats, includes a small support team from the HHC.

The ROD tankers are making sure the grunts and artillerymen know that the heaters in the tanks are working great!

1st Plt, 7 recon Coy after jumping from their Dash-7 transport.

Image

Making good time back from the DZ while still keeping good track discipline.
The regroup was quick today even without electronic means, those one dollar whistles still do the job!
Also everyone knew in advance the wind forecast for the DZ plus the aircraft heading the stick was being dropped on.

Not used on this occasion but the Coy often jump with snowmobiles to pull several skiers plus extra gear.
They can operate in small teams or as a complete unit.

2nd PLT, 9th Tank Company (Northland Dragoons), 2nd Battalion, 7th Brigade.

Platoon of Redneck-120's plus an attached command, support and logistics element.
Four man crew 120mm system based on the new 'Redneck' platform.
Just over 40 tons with APS and built net-centric from the tracks up.

Yellowknife weather.
Light snow ending this afternoon then cloudy with 30 percent chance of flurries. Wind up to 15 km/h. High minus 17. Wind chill near minus 27.
Tonight, cloudy with 30 percent chance of flurries. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 21. Wind chill near minus 28. Risk of frostbite.

Before the start of play today, all KDF members are required to enjoy a communal nature walk around the local area, aprox 4 kms.
At the end is a very simple 5 minute talk by a senior NCO on the topic of the day. Today is watching out for signs of frostbite and effects of hypothermia!
Today it was with snowshoes tomorrow NATO planks (X-country skis). Anyone is welcome to join.

Heat 1: NC Canadian Airborne Regiment/A Platoon.

Heat 2: NC Canadian Airborne Regiment/A Platoon.

Next up is the Tank Driving Course. like before, the 1st Heat is in the morning, 2nd heat is in the afternoon, and the 3rd heat in the evening. let your vehicles have a chance to get very cold, as part of the Tank driving course is how fast your vehicles start and warm up.

The NC Paratroopers are celebrating their victory's at their barracks in CFB Yellowknife. Most of them bare signs of frostbite. But they wear it as badge of honour.
