LAst Chance Saloon

Post by Bruce Morris »

Pibber,

I have really enjoyed your Vietnam riverine pictures ever since I got a glimpse of the bow of the YRBM. I was on the YRBM-21 as an EMFN in 70-71. I have some pictures from that time including the LAST CHANCE SALOON sign on the 'beer barge'. It had a couple of pictures of Andy Capp on it. If you are interested I can send you a few pictures. Your models are an inspiration for me to try and match!

These models amaze me. That m577 vignette is so cool with the old, broken artillery piece nearby, so thoughtful, such character. Incredible work, master Pibber!

Thanks again for sharing!

Hi Bruce ! :D

The "Last chance saloon" is an original subject of the war river. I only have two photos about it : a picture for three-quarter rear view and a picture of where there was the barbecue. I don't have photo with accurate color of the front panel of the "last chance saloon". Any additional info you could give me would actually be valuable and welcome !

I am pleased that my work pleases you. :)
The purpose of this sharing is that it inspires many people as possible, it shows the possibilities of gaming landscape and it shows to other players at other levels of play that 1/285 Vietnam figurines by GHQ is really fantastic.
I keep on my project "Vietnam Mobile Riverine Force" with the beautiful GHQ figurines and a Vietnam wargaming environment created by me to play 1:1.

I am very honored to talk with a Vietnam rivers war veteran. The YRBM-21 is one of my support boats projects (it will be building in "scratch" soon to play war river). Indeed, I greatly appreciate photos or useful information to help me carry out this project. :)
I'm interested in the pictures of the YRBM-21 and also, more generally, in photos of all barracks ships used during the war river. :)

RedLeif : Thank you for your comments :D.

New "cool" river ship will come soon ...
Pibber.

LSM-H

Post by pibber »

Hi all ! :D
"Cool" river ship :
Here is one of my latest projects finally finished : A LSM-H (hospital ship) of the RVN (South Vietnamese Navy) during the Vietnam War. :D

In the South Vietnamese’s fleet who fought alongside the Americans forces against the Communists, there were five armed LSM (#402 to #406) and two LSM-H (hospital ships) (# 400 and # 401). These last two plied the Mekong Delta rivers to provide medical assistance to remote villages (as part of operations "win the hearts and minds").
Also, they had the mission to : support the troops of the ARVN (Army of South Vietnam) during large size operations in the Delta, resupply advanced rivers bases, extract soldiers during fluvials operations, extract civilians,...

I also saw a photo of one of these ships in medical support mission for the "SeaFloat base" in the Ca Mau Peninsula (southern tip of South Vietnam).
I found so interesting to be able to use this type of vessel during game play "Riverine Vietnam" with American and South Vietnamese’s patrols.

First, I bought a LSM from the Leva’s product at 1/285 (very expensive ! :x ). But after much research, I realized that the Leva model contained actually too many errors of proportions : hull length too short, too low kiosk, kiosk portholes in the wrong place, interior details of the wedge completely fanciful , the hold floor too low, diameter of the vat (for Bofor 40mm in front) false, rear portion of the shell too narrow, ... :x

Seeing all these problems, I dropped this model and I decided to redo a full LSM in plastic card (Evergreen). I kept this single model unmounted and I cast it in various parts in silicone molds, so I can make few prints resin.
On this LSM-H # 400 selfmade in resin, I added the railings in brass wire, antennas in very small electric wire, figurines and accessories.
Paints are all Humbrol (hull: 64 matt light gray for example)

Another RVN LSM will be assembled soon (#406 or # 404)... 8)
Pibber.

Thank you for sharing your work. Is your work displayed somewhere in France, a museum perhaps? Thanks for relating that you're casting your own bases in resin. Did you make a resin base for your LCI as well?

Thanks Again

My work is sometime displayed only during models miniatures expositions in France, near Paris.
I used to be in Ransart miniatures/figurines exposition, Belgium (each year, in late january), (except this year : I haven't gone there because there was no free display space for me).
The LCI is about to be mold too, like the LSM-H. (Mold will be done soon, this month...)
I want few for Pacific (very great Pacific color scheme camo !), Normandy amphibious assault landings... and only one for French riverine forces during Indochine campaing. :P

Wow!

The details and quality is really impressive! Rust spots, multicolored roofs, dirt and such - I don't think you can make it more realistic than this. Now I really have something to strive for when I start painting my models...

 Beautiful! (as always!) Truly inspirational. Your attention to detail is museum quality, if not better. Have you thought of putting out a book showing how you do your work? (3 copies please, will pay extra for autographs) Better yet, do you have an apprentice opening? :)

Thank you for your very nice comments, they touch me strongly. :D
As I said before on this forum one time, internet is very great thing but it's a little bit frustrating too, because when we have contact with people all over the world, it's not easy to meet them and to share "in live" our common passion.

I haven't thought of putting out a book showing how I do my work. It's really a good idea :D but I don't know anyone for that... I will thinking about this idea...
Another possibility is a website. But I must take the time to find someone who could make me that job (or maybe a blog), it would be cool !

I'm not making reply on each thread on this forum because Shakespeare language is not a reflexe for me (sometime it's not easy to me to write quickly something which really show my feeling about a forum post), but I want to say some of you show very good jobs too on Modern, WWII or in Micronaut GHQ figurines, even if I don't always react to say it. .
This forum is really a very good and interesting source. :D (I go on it nearly every day !)

I'll try keep showing you GHQ's figurines, originals personnal scratchbuilding models and later, wargaming's landscape for GHQ mini's, to feed this source.
Thank you all,
Best regards,
Pibber.

Like all the best work, I could just stare at these for hours... trying to pick out all the amazing details.

I'd order a book or two, also!
