Well, done Irish
I like the Asahi Repair ship model very much. The AMCs would be excellent although they were involved in some atrocities in the Indian Ocean against Dutch and British merchant men.
Most of the other large to medium tankers, cargo ships et. al. of all primary naval powers would be excellent subjects for models. Thanks for reopening this topic as it is full of good info.

A haven of reference
Irish, I just took the time to take a look at your thread, I think I have looked at it before, but can't remember for certain. Very Impressive! The research that you have had to put in to compile this record had to have been a labor of love. I came here to look it over for a few minutes and ended up spending hours, lol. And still didn't do it justice. The Japanese, British and American merchant fleets are where I spent most of my time, then I branched off into tankers, and on and on. This is truly a haven of reference for all of us. Great work! Between you and Don, and all the other contributors, you keep us naval types going. Thanks.

Just a minor vent concerning a pet peeve:
There is a difference between merchant ships and auxiliary ships:
A merchant ship is a civilian ship that functions (in a capitalist society) as a profit-making enterprise. Typical merchant ships are cargo carriers, oil tankers, passenger liners, tugs, barges, dredges, etc.
An auxiliary ship is a ship that is a part of the military performing a support (as opposed to a combat) function. In some cases, auxiliary ships may be physically identical to merchant ships (e.g., USN Crater, AK70, class transports are standard Liberty ships). In other cases, however, there is a distinct difference. For example, there is no commercial role for a ship intended to support seaplanes in a combat zone. The Curtiss (AV 4) class seaplane tenders were designed specifically for this role and are clearly auxiliary ships rather than merchant ships.
In previous recent postings, USS Langley, IJN Asahi and armed merchant cruisers are auxiliary types (even though the AMC were built as merchant ships, arming and using them as AMCs makes them auxiliary ships). Doxford, Clan MacCaulay, and Otaio are merchant ships.
Thank you for tolerating my persnickety attitude.

Auxilliaries
Thanks for pointing out the diferences, Don. I tend to lump them all together but I see your point. The line gets blurred a bit in wartime I think when the Navys kind of commandeer some of the merchant ships, etc. Tankers come to mind, but purpose built ships or specially modified ex merchants would certainly be auxilliaries. My main purpose in this venue is that we would all like to see more models of them, lol. Thanks again for all your contributions and hard work on our behalf.

Differences
Don,
I am completely in agreement with you and I recognize the differences between the private sector and the naval support. I was combining them all together as while this could be argued as well I consider the Auxs as Non Combat, even though they are armed, but then again in war time so were many of the private ships as well. I wanted to come out with a single list so to speak by nation of the Merchant and Auxs I think would give a great representation and balance.
