My suggestion... command vehicles (M113s or M3), M577s, medics, maintenance (M88s, M113s. wreckers), signal - M577 and a few HUMVEEs. Then think about spt plt, mess later. There are more wheeled support vehicles than there are tracked combat vehicles, so the cost can be significant.
All blessings flow from a good mission statement.

Redleg,
Nice looking kit. I suggest you focus on adding the support elements that Regiment would chop to each ground squadron; engineer platoon, ADA section and chemical recon and defense platoon.
And my personal favorite, an air cav troop from 4th sqdn. By SOP, each ground squadron had a "dedicated" air troop. Depending on when you are modeling it, the troop could be either 6 OH-58A/C and 4 AH1F, or 6 OH58D and 4 AH64 Apaches, or currently 8 OH58 Kiowa Warriors.
Good luck and have fun...

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I was thinking of just skipping the HHT maintenance platoon since each troop already has maintenance stuff, but then I have these M977s and M978s sitting here calling my name. They're saying, "Me too! I want to be CAV!"
I didn't know that each squadron had a dedicated air troop! I was going to start on 2nd squadron next, but maybe I will do the slice elements you spoke of and then move onto Coyote Squadron (the staff nerd in me demands that all units company size and above have call signs. 2nd squadron will be Coyote). I have a few more days to figure this out while I paint my 1st how battery.

Sounds like you will have a nice collection. It sounds like you are going with the regimental rather than divisional squadron. I generally skip the air and support platoon elements, although I try to have one complete set per TOE, just because it's too expensive to have all the wheels as well, and it can be REALLY expensive to have the aviation. I didnt suggest those because you said you had a restricted budget. My regimental squadron does have both an engineer platoon and a vulcan plt.

I finally got around to starting on my ACR storage plan. I’m calling it the Cav Box. It was a nice Southern California day so I worked outside and I got the grooves all cut and the sides put together. I put the 1st squadron tray in to test the fit and it worked well. I got the boards for the top and bottom of the box cut, but it was getting too hot so I called it a day. I’ll try to get those boards on tomorrow, along with some handles and little rubber feet so I don’t scratch my old lady’s table when I bring it in. I’m still undecided on a door. A single hinged door on the front that drops down would be easiest, but maybe a 2-door front that opens like a cupboard would be easier to access.
I’m also going to rearrange the squadron trays, and there will be a total of 6 trays; one each for the 3 ground squadrons, air squadron, support squadron, and one for HHT and attached companies.

I love this build. It looks like it'll be kinda heavy once you load it up. Wish I had one myself. While I'm at it, I wish I had his weather too. Cold and wet here.
On a serious note, how did you build the shelf? What materials? Did you tack the sides to the bottom? Lastly, are the dividers fixed or glued in? I'm asking......for a friend.

Thanks, guys. This is kind of like micro armor - if you take the picture from a good distance you can't see all the mistakes! I'm not exactly a natural with power tools.
I'm going to try to get some more work done on it today because I'm anxious to paint it. I'm going to drop by Home Depot and see what kind of hinges and fasteners they have and then decide how to do the front door, though I do like the sliding front cover idea!
The individual shelves are just 2' wide x 1' deep hardwood boards. 1/4" thick. They come in 2 x 2' pieces and i just cut it in half. The dividers are small square dowels that I cut and glued down. For the most part they are pretty secure, but the ends of the linger pieces popped up so there must be a little bendage. The box has a groove all along the back as well as the sides, so hopefully that will keep the shelves from sagging while they are in the box.

So I finally finished the Cavalry Box! I may add a tasteful cav logo or something, and I need to touch up the paint in a few places, but I’m in no big rush for that stuff. I still need to re-organize the trays and I’m going to have some trays of ships and aircraft as well until I get more of the ACR done. Once this box gets full I’ll have to build another box and move the non-cav trays over!
