I stumbled across this article while discussing artillery raids in the context of another wargame. I figured it may be an interesting read to anyone in this thread.

Thanks ,that was very informative,and entertaining. It gives me food for thought on some of my future games (I like to use maps-mini campaign type). If I did an artillery raid using what the 5/11th did,I would class them as class 1 in my game system. This would be because of all the preparation and training that went before the raid.

Paul,

My contact at 2/24 Mar. said that they do not have the system. He thinks that only the active Recon or Intel. units may have them in Iraq. Could be MAF assets, he's not sure. Will pas on any new info if I get any.

My friend at 3/23 Mar. said that they do not have the LRAS-3 system either. He thinks that it is an "Army only" system at present. A guy I work with has a son in the 5/20th Inf., 3rd Bde. (Stryker), 2nd Inf. Div. at Ft. Lewis, WA. The son said that they are using the system in their Cav. Squadron and Inf. Bn. Recon platoons.

My reference is Mini Color Series: U.S. Army HMMWVs in Iraq pg 45 "In the near future the United States Marine Corps will also get LRAS 3."

Believe me I know all about being the last to get the latest toys.

I wanted to do some more checking before I responded. I'm familiar with the publisher, just don't have that particular book. I presume the USMC will get the LRAS-3 down the road. Can't find anything at usmc.mil. However, at army.mil, there were several articles about it in Army service. My apologies, sir. Meant no disrespect.

For the unknowing, HQ Marine Corps is at 8th & I Streets in Washington, DC.

To start: Cold weather gear in Late 1980's titled "1951 Trousers" right before Gortex - guess why?

Ospreys

Replacing an airframe first procured in 1964. Older than me with 18+ years of service!

Harriers

20+ years old, Introduced in 1985, provides us timely and effective F/W CAS off of the amphibious assault ships such as LHA and LHD.

AAVs

20+ years old, introduced in 1983. You may be speaking of the AAAV, yes new piece of gear, but special design not needed or requested by the army.

3 fireteam squads

Outstanding tactical thought and study.

Versatality on every level

Outstanding leadership at all levels.

Twin engined everything!

Necessary due to over sea transport and sea basing.

and I hope the politicians leave them alone,unlike the Army

Wasn't it President Harry S. Truman who lamented about the PR Machine that was the USMC in the late 1940's during defense reorganization.

All of the above (your posts) are true. Most of our stuff is different from tha Army's in one form or another. The main mission is different. The politicians have already messed with us. 3rd Mar. Div. on Okinawa is only 2/3 strength today. 9th Mar. were mothballed several years ago, as was half of 12th Mar. (artillery). But when the politicians call, we always answer. Didn't mean to get on a soapbox and preach. Semper Fi!

P.S.: I my day, we had a saying: "The Marines have done so much with so little for so long, that we can now do anything with nothing forever."

Back to reality. Speaking of Ospreys, are they going to replace 'Frogs on a 1 to 1 basis? Or will they have a new TOE?
