As part of the November is paint a GHQ Helicopter Month thread

WIP…

These are pretty straightforward PITAs…

With the rotors off, I went ahead and made the rotor blur pieces. A bit larger than the CH47 rotors so new pieces had to be made.

Slowly wrapping up my CH53s that I have been sitting on for a while now.

Placement of the magnet underneath is critical. These magnets and the stand are doing all they can to keep the CH53 in the air.

Thank you Burt! Oddly enough, I am trying to capture all of the different eras/fronts at the same time. Currently, I am working on the early years in the west and the east (Poland, France, Belgium, BEF, Finland etc). The eastern front ’41-45… And also the western front post June 1944 and on. I have a ton of scenario books from over the years so that helps me stay on task.

Next up would be North Afrika and then work on a snow set of vehicles. (although I doubt that will happen) I always found North Afrika interesting with the Italians, DAK and the Commonwealth forces beating each other up.

The CFO allowed me to order a bunch of GHQ stuff for Black Friday for my birthday and holiday. Consulting the spreadsheet inventory, I don’t have a lot left to grab for the European theater which is a first.

Once that is complete, then I need to switch gears and start working on creating a desert board and picking up more vehicles. Could be worse things I am into, right? Hehe I need to get to playing more these days instead of collecting, painting and building.

Thank you Steve! I get so much motivation from checking out everyone else’s stuff here that it gives me ideas to continue working on my stuff. Just hoping to give back what I have been able to receive I guess…

I have the same affliction - I am Close to wrapped up the east front late war troops, as well as West front, and went right into DAK and the desert war. I have to figure out how to make a table for that, and because I have all the time in the world, sarcasm implied, I thought it would be a good idea to start purchasing France 1940 stuff. Oh and I have been slowly collecting aircraft as well and not painting them… waiting for the other shoe to drop to start the pacific campaign lol.

Let me know your thoughts on a desert board, looking for the advice...

I was able to finish off our tabletop board. Now I need to crank the hedgerows into high gear to complete the board entirely. Hoping to run an airborne scenario over the Holiday break.

Quite the project...or should I say, projects, you got going on there. Very nice stuff.
I have often thought about the hex terrain, but storage would be a hassle, but it sure looks nice :D

Your WWII vehicles. What size of bases are you using?

Hehe I almost bit off more than I could chew with this ping pong table idea and hedgerows. I have another 50 hedgerow popsicle sticks in progress tonight that I am working on. Trying to see what kind of dent I can put on the table. Motivation is starting to falter though… haha eyes going crosseyed.

Thank you! I have a little bit of everything at this point. My hope is that I have enough to cover most years but we shall see.

I like the hex terrain but I can see the issue with storage that is commonly associated with it. When we moved into this house (new build) a few years back, I had to hang ceiling fans in almost every room and two in the game room. These boxes are quite sizable. So I gather the hexes in groups and neatly stack them into the fan boxes. The plain jane flat hexes are easy as you can stack them to the top so I can place quite a few hexes in each box. The village/town hexes take a little more room as you would expect as do the forest sections. But I am lucky to have a spot in the garage where I can stack the fan boxes on top of each and every one is happy. Then just a trip or two upstairs/downstairs to bring the hexes.

Thank you for the kind words.

Regarding the bases… I purchase my styrene from Amazon as I can maximize the sheet count for the best price. I use .040â€￾ thick styrene for my bases as that is about as tall as I want to get without looking like the vehicle is on ‘something’. Any thinner and the base gets a little flexible. Plus .040 works for me when I am scratch building something.

My ‘standard’ base is ¾-inch wide by 1 inch long. But I use ¾-inch by ¾ inch for my infantry so they can fit into the town/village areas/buildings without taking up too much room. And for my long barreled vehicles I go ¾-inch wide and 1.5 inches long.

Ideally, I would go without the base but I know the vehicle’s barrel will be on borrowed time. I find that the base helps protect the vehicle’s barrel from bending. I really have to do something special (read stupid) to get a barrel to bend on me. Even with the addition of the vehicle antennas, those even help lower the blow if I become butter fingers.

And in the end, its fun to create a mini diorama/base for each vehicle. I try to mirror the hex terrain I am making and hope everything ‘blends in’. My hope is that the base will then disappear somewhat. With the base attached, it also gives me the bottom side to add the vehicle type and give it an auto number that is unique. With this unique number, then I can reconcile that with my excel file for an inventory count. This way I know what I have and what is left to get. Seems to work...

Hope that helps.

That board looks excellent. I plan to adopt your village approach on the hexes. I have to monkey around and find out the best way to do bocage.
