Basing Infantry and Infantry Support Weapons

NEWBIE QUESTIONS: I'm basing some German and Soviet infantry and infantry support/heavy weapons for WW II Micro Armour: THE GAME.

(1) From some previous posts it appears there's no set basing for infantry, somewhere around 5 seems to work. Correct?

(2) When basing infantry support/heavy weapons, how many should I include on a 1"x1" base? For the G#56 German Support Weapons package would one each of the PAK 34 and 75mm light infantry gun be sufficient? For the R#36 Russian Heavy Weapons package would two different types be good enough?

i was just coming on to ask almost the exact same question! :D

i'm just about ready to base my german support squads. what do you guys typically put on a base? one of the LMG/Mortar/MMG stands on each base? or do you stick some standing infantry guys on there as well?

But you are free to do whatever you desire, as long as it looks like "An Infantry Support Stand"
...which to my mind is one of the best parts of "membership" here -- there seems to be an abundance of not only tolerance of differing methods and viewpoints, but a wealth of encouragement to share those thoughts and processes.

Other message boards I participate in -- won't mention names -- almost seem to take a "my way or the highway" approach... to nearly everything, often breaking out into "flame wars" between the differing (opposing?) "factions". Things are so much more relaxed here -- and I like it!! :D

It depends on the scale and rules you are using. For example, if I'm using GHQ's rules (1-stand = 1-platoon), I would sometimes mix types. If I were modeling an Afrika Korps Motorcycle Company, I would create three stands. Since these units were used to suppress defenders so the armored cars could break through, the platoons were armed with HMGs and 50mm mortars. So, each stand would have a HMG and a 50mm mortar model on it. I'd add a leader to designate the command stand. GHQ's rules allow for a special "suppression" capability for designated units.

ok, that brings up a few things-

i'm probably going to mainly use rulesets with 1 stand = 1 squad.

so would i put a pair of mortars or MG's, for example, on one stand? or just one figure per base still?

and another question i had- the mortars in the german heavy weapons pack- what size are those supposed to be? the ones with the two guys laying prone, with one covering his head and the other dropping the mortar round in. are those 50mm? 81mm? something else? or doesn't it matter?

In the older German HW pack, there is a model of the 12cm Granatwerfer 42 heavy mortar and the 8cm Granatwerfer 34 medium mortar. These casts can be painted up nice but are nowhere near GHQs current standard. (read - pretty Puleeeeze redo this blister GHQ!) :!: :?
The prone fellows are firing a 5cm leichte Granatwerfer 36 light mortar.
With some reworking of existing figures, you can makeup decent mortar teams for most nations but it is very time consuming!

This was the approach I was going to take but I wanted a sanity check before gluing models to bases. I mostly play solo, but when I wargame against my buddies they use a common sense approach to the rules (well--most of the time! ).

Thanks for all the help,

For what it's worth... in the Sept/Oct Tac News the scenario states:
Each infantry GHQ stand requires 6x inf figures
Each infantry HQ stand requires 5x inf figures
Each infantry/SMG stand requires 4x inf figures
Each MG stand requires 2x MGs
81/82mm mortar stands require 2 crew (presumably one tube)
120mm mortar stands require 2 crew (presumably one tube)
There are also a bunch of descriptions for towed guns too (2-5, depending on size).
How much difference does it make?

Zip.

Put on however many you think look right. You also need to consider if you're likely to toy with other rule sets that have a different philosophy, especially if you're going to mix weapon types on a stand.

My squadies are 3-5 to a base, there might be some high level HQs with 6. My support weapons are mounted singly, although the bases are smaller than the GHQ 1"x1". Motorcycles in pairs. Guns are crewed by whatever looks sensible. I don't have six guys piled in behind a 45mm or 6pdr ATG.

IMHO, mount the infantry guns and 37mm ATGs singly. Stick some foliage around them if the base looks a bit bare.

My 10 cents (we no longer have 1, 2 or 5c pieces.... )

Mike,
My 10 cents (we no longer have 1, 2 or 5c pieces.... )
Off topic, but... seriously? Does everyone just "round off" to the nearest 10c? (I can't imagine a lot of businesses giving up even 1c on a purchase...)

Tom

I've been in the same boat as sturmgruppe 1944 until reading this thread and a few others.
This what I have chosen to do for my troops, which are based on 1"x1" bases.

These are based for '39-41 Germans forces.
- Infantry platoon- 3 stands of 3 infantry riflemen + LMG w/ 1 rifleman being an officer (dude standing and pointing) per platoon.
- Infantry support stand- prone spotter and prone mortar team. 1 per platoon.

Which leads me too this question:

In the rules, the TO&E on page 54, '39-40 Germany (Europe) shows the Command Center which is the GHQ. At the bottom, for a Grenadier Battalion, it shows a HQ.
When is the GHQ used?

Yeah, disregard this comment as I found out be reading the back of the book.
