Retrun of the SQerL

Guys:

Our forum bug, the SQL error, seems to have returned. Sometimes, when you post a new message to the forum, you will see an error message.

Please, whe this happens, hit the "Back" function on your browser, and copy your message to your clipboard so you don't loose it. But then GO TO THE FORUM and see if your message got through before you try again, and again, to post. VERY OFTEN, when you get the SQL error message, your post did in fact to through.

If you don't check to see if your posting made it before reposting, we will wind up with a lot of duplicate and triplicate postings.

As one of your friendly neighborhood moderators, I have tried to delete some of the duplicates that have shown up. But even the moderator functions can be bitten by the SQerL, and since we mods have greater powers than you mear mortals, if and when we get bitten, the impact may be greater.* So we will all be better off if members don't run around making 2, 3, 4 and more duplicate postings while we try to catch the SQerL again.

* Note: Real sorry about that thread on micro armor website links that seems to have "disappeared". See, it had a whole bunch of duplicate posts, and I was just trying to ... well ... um ...

Hey, at least it wasn't the "Show us yer Stuff" thread!

Mk1,

I tried to post to another thread but got a DEBUG ERROR, not a SQL error. My post did not go through three times. I'm wondering if this one will, but it's worth a try. I wrote the GHQ about the DEBUG ERROR but haven't heard back, but it was only a couple hours ago so I expect they either haven't yet read my email or are working the problem.

It seems that this time around, the SQerL is acting particularly .. well ... SQerLy. I have seen delays of more than a day between the time the SQerL bites me, and the time my posting appears on the forum. Take this thread for example. I posted it on Saturday, but it was not visible on the forum (at least, not visible to ME) until Monday.

So ... while our Forum Admins work on chasing down this pesky rodent, I suggest the following:
If you have a posting that you really don't want to have to re-type, copy it to your favorite word processor program and save it away in a temporary location. Give your posting a little time to show up before you re-post. Otherwise we will again see our threads filled up with multiple instances of identical posts.

Oh, and BTW:
Yep, I said:

Seems that I didn't actually delete that thread after all. It indeed came back, edited to the extent that I had edited it. But it was gone, off of the forum, for several hours. I am still VERY hesitant to try editing out the duplicates in the "Show Us yer Stuff" thread, or any of our other long-running favorites.

(And I suggest my brother moderators also take a conservative approach as well.)

Well, it did indeed go through.

Note that when you do get bitten by the SQerL, it manifests itself in a "DEBUG MODE" page. But on that page you will see that an SQL Error is listed. The forum software is acting squirrely. Hence the nickname of this particular rodent.

If this gets through... well, who knows? I've tried from both my home and at-work computers to post messages, but to no avail. Maybe it was something in the way I typed it...

I figure it will get fixed... eventually. I just have to remember to be patient...

Which brings to mind a "knock-knock" joke my daughter loved to tell when she was five or six years old...

Daughter: Knock knock.

Dad: Who's there?

Daughter: Impatient cow.

Dad: Impatient...

Daughter, interrupting: MOO!

I don't know if this is relevant but it may help in finding and eradicating the SQerL. I just got the DEBUG error in doing a search of this forums messages. I didn't want to scroll through pages and pages of threads looking for the one I wanted so, being naturally lazy I used the search feature, and BINGO, that blasted SQerL showed up. I really do hope this helps now that you know it's not only showing up when posting messages.

Error update:

We sent an e-mail to our website developers as soon as we heard about the problem. e-mailing them is the best method of communication with this type of thing because they like to have the exact error message copied and pasted so that they can see what it says. We have spoken with them this morning, and were told that they should have it straightened out sometime today.

Thanks for bearing with us, and for usiing our forum.
