The water is made using a thick layer of acrylic gel medium, then painted with arcylic tube thick paints.

Really excellent work here. Some of the best naval stuff I've seen especially in this scale.

Peter,
Beautiful work! Love the attention to detail - especially with the carrier air group. I don't have any modern, but I have often thought of purchasing the GHQ CVN model to build for display (and comparison) purposes. Nice job!

Thanks for the kind comments. Here's what I did:
I used Liquidtex Heavy Arcylic Gel Medium, Thick type.
I spread it about as thick as I would jam on bread with a stubby brush
When it started to set up several hours later I stippled the surface with another brush
I did not tint the gel. It took a few days to dry.
Once dried, I painted on top of the gel with tube acrylics, using four shades of "blue" and some white on a palette, to get the right shades in the right places. I blended the "zones" of blue together. I use the thick gel so that it takes a long time to dry, and thus a long time to work and blend.
When the paint dried ina two days, I overcoated it with another layer of Liquidtex Heavy Arcylic Gel Medium, Thick type to give it a "glossy" look.
The hard part is the painting, which is more art than technique I guess. I make no pretensions of greatness, but it is that blending of colors that makes or breaks the look. My/Your milage may vary! I have seen some very nice work done with an airbrush on the color of the water as well.
I agree about the crossover customers-- I rarely wargame but love to collect and paint GHQ stuff as models onto themselves, and hope to spread the word via model sites lilke Modelwarships.com.
