Consolidated Micronaut wish list for 2007-2008

Post by Donald M. Scheef »

OK; for those of you who have been putting your 'most wanted' lists into the Comprehensive Micronaut wish list, here is a better place. Let me explain my reasoning:
- I set up the Comprehensive Micronaut wish list to include every military ship since the introduction of steam & iron that GHQ does not model. The idea was more to give ideas to other gamers/modelers than to lobby directly to GHQ. This is going to be a long, drawn-out effort, but it fits my compulsive personality.
- Consolidated 'most wanted' lists may get buried in the extremely long comprehensive lists. Also, they will tend to become obsolete as (we hope) GHQ fills some of the wishes.

So here's the idea:
- Provide your list of the Micronauts you would most like to see produced in the 2007-2008 season. In July this year, when the 2007-2008 production schedule is announced, I will abandon this thread and start a new one for 2008-2009.
- There's no limit on the number of ships on your list, but try to limit it to about 10 to 12 ships. In the 2006-2007 season, GHQ released 11 Micronauts (excluding age of sail).
- Provide some support for your choice. Try to convince GHQ that your choices are good for the company.
- Although all my choices are WWII era, don't feel limited to this era. I just haven't organized my Great War choices yet. If you prefer modern, Great War, Age of Sail or some other era, feel free to voice up. Eventually, I want to get into Spanish-American War and Russo-Japanese War eras.
- Please feel free to criticize my choices.

My choices are:

- UK BB Vanguard - Although it was completed post-war, it was completed and fits into a number of hypothetical scenarios. Besides that, it's a beautiful ship that no one models in 1/2400 metal.

- UK BB Lion class - This is my sole hypothetical model on the list. GHQ makes models of the German H class and the US Montana. The Japanese don't need a hypothetical BB with Yamato & Musashi.

- Germany CA Hipper class - Everyone makes a model of Prinz Eugen. No one makes a model of Hipper class in 1/2400. They differ enough from Prinz Eugen that you can't do an effective conversion.

- Italy CA Pola - This ship differed from all the other Italian heavy cruisers in the combination of hull and superstructure. No one makes a 1/2400 model in metal.

- UK CA London (as rebuilt) - This is a close choice; there are several other British heavy cruisers that also need to be modeled (Kent, Australia & Canberra; Cornwall & Berwick; Devonshire, Shropshire & Suss-x; and York). I chose the rebuilt London simply because I like the looks. No one makes a 1/2400 metal model of any of these ships.

- UK CL Modified Fiji class (Ceylon, Newfoundland, Uganda) - All the other models of Fiji class are the earlier 4-triple 6" mount version. No one makes a model of the later model with only 3 triple 6" mounts but with added antiaircraft. Note also that many of the earlier Fiji class were modified to this appearance during the war.

Germany T-1939 class (T-22 through T-36 torpedo boats) - No one makes a 1/2400 metal model of this class, which were highly active during the war.

UK DD Lance, Lively, Legion & Ghurka (ex-Larne) - Their armament of four twin 4" guns interests me. So far as I can tell, no one makes a 1/2400 model of these ships.

UK sloops Black Swan class - I've got plenty of 'flower' class corvettes, but the British had hundreds of other escort type ships (Bay, Loch, Bittern, Egret, etc.). Any of these would be a welcome addition.

LCI(L) - The intermediate design with tall, round conning tower and side ramps. The early version with lower, square conning tower and the late version with bow doors are both available, but no one makes the intermediate version (which was built in large numbers).

Germany AMC Atlantis - The most successful raider of WW II. Surprisingly, no one makes a 1/2400 metal model of this ship. Anything German seems to sell well. Any of the other German raiders (WWII and WWI) would also be welcome.

US AP West Point (AP-23, ex SS America) - The best of the US transports of the WW II era. Fair models of her two near-sisters are available, but nothing in 1/2400 for West Point.

US Dreadnoughts

Post by Orion320 »

For the Great War period: No last sortie of the High Sea Fleet would be complete without the US dreadnoughts. While only the coal burners were present, an interesting "what if" would include the oil burners as well. So, I humbly request the following:
USS Delaware (North Dakota)
USS Utah (Florida)
USS Arkansas (Wyoming)
USS New York (Texas)
USS Oklahoma (Nevada)
USS Pennsylvania (Arizona)
USS New Mexico (Idaho and Mississippi)

All of these in the Great War period were likely opponents for the High Sea Fleet if it had dared venture out in the last year of the Great War.

HI all, I am a Modern era collector and would love to see the following models added to the GHQ line:

H.M.S. ARK ROYAL CV (1955-1978) - This is not modelled by any other company in 1:2400 scale, and is an important ship in Royal Navy history, as it was the last conventional aircraft carrier to serve in the U.K. navy.

H.M.S. LEANDER FF (1963-1986) - This was the ship that gave the name type 12M class frigate. It is not produced bay any maker in the 1:2400 scale, and with 26 ships in this class, and the design was also sold to other navies around the world making lot's of scope for sales of this class of model. A choice of Sea Wolf and Exocet versions would also add to this class. Not to mention some of this class served in the Falklands war in 1982.

H.M.S. FEARLESS LPD (1963-2002) - This ship is not made by and company in 1:2400 scale, and is a must for any Falkland's campaign. With 2 ships in the class there is scope for sales, and would add the capability for marine landings to a U.K. task force

H.M.S. HERMES (1959-1986) - Hermes was the Flagship of the Royal Navy in the Falklands war in 1982, and as such is another must for anyone interested in this period of naval history. This is made by 1 other maker, but with the high quality of model making that GHQ make, would be a stunning addition to their Modern Naval line. There were 4 ships in this class, so they could make the model with a separate ski-Jump, which would mean you could buy all 4 ships in this class.

H.M.S. OCEAN (1998-2007) - This is the Royal Navy's latest Helicopter carrier and has a similar shape to the Invincible class Carriers. This is not made by any Model company, and would be a welcome addition to the U.K. navy line up.

H.M.S DEVONSHIRE GDD (1962-1978) - This was called the county Class, and was made in 2 batches. 8 ships in total mean plenty of scope for sales, although made by another company in 1:2400 Scale, this would look 100 time better modelled by GHQ, with the choice of both guns or Exocet versions, a sure fire winner.

H.M.S. VANGUARD SSBN (1993-2007) - this is the Lead boat in the U.K's Nuclear deterrent, and is not made by any company in the 1:2400 scale. So with 4 boats in the class, has room for plenty of sales.

U.K. AIRCRAFT - It would ne nice to have some U.K. Aircraft to match the U.S. and U.S.S.R. packs. Maybe some Sea Vixens, Tornado, Phantom, Bucaneer, Nimrod and Vulcan Bombers, Also some Sea King, Wasp, and Westland Wessx Helicopters to add to the 1096's-80 ships.

OTHER WORLD NAVY SHIPS

GERMANY

F124 SACHSEN TYPE 124 FRIGATE (2002-2007) This is Germany's new class of Frigate, and is similar to the Dutch Designed De Zeven Provinciën class frigate, there are 4 in this class, which means plenty of scope for sales, and it is not made by any other model company in the 1:2400 scale.

ITALY

Ã￾LVARO DE BAZAN - F100 CLASS FRIGATE (2002-2007) - This class is currently in service with the Italian navy, and would be an ideal addition to a NATO led Taskforce. It is not made in 1:2400 Scale, and with 4 ships in the class has some room for sales.

JAPAN

HARUNA - HARUNA CLASS DESTROYER (1973-2009) - This is a helicopter Destroyer of the Japan Navy, there are 2 ships in the class and is not made by any company in 1:2400 scale.

There are some U.S. Ships, I would add to this list, but in order to keep this list to a manageable size I will list those, in the future.

Reguards to all, and happy Painting,

I am pulling some of the applicable requests from the comprehensive thread.
This is from Mickel:

"Mogami as rebuilt after heavy damage (at Midway?). One of a kind, I know, but at Leyte.

Canberra and Australia, especially given the significant battles they were in. With the excellent work GHQ tends to do on ships, the "relatively minor" differences will stand out (at least to us relative purists ).

Late war versions of some of the treaty cruisers, particularly Portland/Indianapolis - Portland due to her presence with Oldendorf's battle line, and Indianapolis for those with a sense of history, given her untimely demise."

"My 10 cents... These are also in my other wishlist post, but I shall elaborate as to why.
Maryland in '44; I suspect this will be largely the same as Donald's selection. Ugly - perhaps. BUT... she was in the final big gun fight ever. As 2/3rds of the battleline is complete, then (since I don't like loose ends...) the other two ships should be. This brings me to Mississippi. The model provided is early war, so doesn't have the enormous AA fit that she had later. I've painted up the existing model in the splinter scheme, but it just looks wrong without the AA galleries, so it'll be getting it's MS-12 at some point."

"How about modern Canadians? We don't have that many ships, but they are very active, with the sad exception of our subs, which we purchased from the Brits at their "scratch and dent sale"... "

From Laevakutt:

"Not only with the scenarios that never were, but the ships that never were: the Dutch Design 1047, the H-44, O-P-Q Class and the P Class, Stalingrad, there are limitless possibilities to use the models. I would like to put up some serious opposition in Dutch East Indies or invade Iceland, or engage the Germans in the Baltic."

From IRISH:

"... here is my carrier wish list:

USN:
CV1 Langley, though I would like to see her in her 1942 configuration as a ACV
CVB 41 Midway, late for the war but one big beautiful ship
CVL 48 Saipan, Replacement CVLs for war losses of the Independence class
CVE 1 Long Island, The first US CVE
CVE 9 Bogue, 10 US and 23 to the UK which can double for the UKN Prince William Class
CVE 26 Sangamon, 4 Convert CVEs from USN oilers
CVE 105 Commencement Bay, Last US CVEs and the largest.

UKN:
Argus, UKs Little guy but played a key role in the ealy years
Imdomitable, a slightly larger Illustrious version
Implacable class, Improved Illustrious class
Unicorn, UKs utility carrier to assist the main fleet carriers
Colossus class, 10 British lights carriers some served in the Pacific
Majestic class, improved version of the Colossus class, 6 ships
Eagle class, 2 built of 3 projected, missed the war
Hermes class, also missed the war
CVEs Britain had a few of their own that would be nice to see.

IJN:
Hosho, Japan's first carrier and was present at Midway
801 class, projected up-gunned version of the Taiho
Shinano, Converted Yamato class BB to fill in the shortage
Unyru class, Last Japanese carriers built
Katsuragi, A Unyru class, but with different funnels
Ryuho, a CVL conversion like the Shoho
Chitose class, As converted to carriers
Taiyo class, 3 CVEs, mainly ised for training but the Taiyo was at Midway
Kaiyo, Another conversion CVE
Shinyo, Another Conversion CVE

Hopefully the folks at GHQ will be able to produce them for us to some degree.

I would like to see some group releases, here are some Ideas:

UKN Doxford, USN Hog Islander A, IJN Aden Maru
UKN Tanker, USN Tanker, IJN Tanker
UKN Ocean Class AK, USN C3, IJN Somedono Maru
UKN Transport, USN President Liner, IJN Aikoku ( can double as an AMC )
UKN Repair ship, USN Vestal, IJN Akashi
UKN Centurion ( Target ) USN Utah ( Target ) IJN Settsu ( Target )"

"As for the tankers I would suggest the following:

IJN Notoro Class Tankers, they are a fair size and number.
IJN Nippon / Genyo Maru Tanker they are slightly larger and were the model for some privately owner tankers as well

UKN MV British Motorist present at Darwin when the IJN bombed that harbor and there seem to be a number of tankers in service with the "British" name being identical in characteristics.

USN U.S.S. Ramapo an early USN tanker differing from the Neosho in size and speed.
USN T2SEA1 Tanker, a T2 type but with slightly different appearance.

I have never found a 1/2400 Vestal, who makes it? Have you seen the Hog Islander and the Presidents by the competition? are they any good? I recently purchased the City of New York and the President Coolidge and I wasn't impressed nor was I disappointed.

I'll give you my call on the mid-size Transports tomorrow after I go through my library, but I would still like to see GHQ do the 522' and 535' President classes. "

From battlewagon:

"Ships I would like to see:
WW II
HMS Vanguard, the last battleship ever built.
KM Lutzow with the smaller superstructure than Graf Spee
IJN Maya, 1944 with the 3rd forward turret replaced by multiple AA mounts
USS Vestal, to complete the Pearl Harbor "Battleship Row" lineup

With the Great War Micronauts, It would be good to have American and French ships represented and for a few more wargaming options the Italians and the Austro-Hungarians as well."

From semonyenko:

"WW2 ships.

UK - the British are really poorly served for escorts.
O-P-Q-R class DDs
L-M class DDs (maybe even the 4 L's equipped with 4" AA)
N class (take the J-K model and put the second bank of torpedoes back in. This should be feasible, as the new 'E' class looks like a re-worked 'H' class model)
Black Swan class sloops
CL Enterprise

Then there's the whole mind-boggling selection of old DDs converted to escorts (V-W class, for example), which would keep the GHQ designers busy for years (until they went totally bonkers!)

Germans
CA Hipper
CA Scheer (or a Lutzow)
BB Gneisnau
T-boots (Mowe/Wulf class, T1-21 class, T22 class) "

From av8rmongo (modern 1/2400 thread):

"I've said it before elsewhere on this forum but I think GHQ missed the boat by not taking advantage of the 20th and now 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict. So my list is skewed sharply to fix that shortage.

1. Argentine Aircraft Pack: Neshers, Daggers, Skyhawks, Trackers and Pucaras
2. HMS Fearless
3. HMS Glamorgan
4. NATO Fighter Aircaft Pack: F-16s, Tornado, Rafale, Typhoon
5. Soviet Fighter Aircraft Pack: MiG-25, MiG-23, MiG-21, Su-22
6. Cold War Carrier Airwing: F-8, S-2, E-1, A-1, A-3, A-4, A-5, A-7
7. PLAN Luhai class DDG
8. PLAN Luhu class DDG
9. RN Type 45 DDG
10. HMS Minerva Leander Batch 2 (Exocet) "

I believe that as part of the conversion of Gneisenau from 11" to 15" guns, she would also have had her mainmast sighted further aft where Scharnhorst's is. Those are the main changes I am aware of, so I wonder if we could just get GHQ to build a Gneisenau with the main mast attached to the funnel and then add a sprue of 15" guns to the Scharnhorst kit to create the upgunned version of the class, and originally both were supposed to recieve this upgrade so putting them with Scharnhorst would be fine.
