Hey all.

Currently planning to painting up a 1940-42 Sturmartillerie Batterie and was looking into the vehicle numbering. Strictly from a '40-42 standpoint, does anyone know about the numbering system used?

I have seen pictures of StuG III ausf B's with a 2-number ID and presume that it it:

10 - Sturmartillerie batterie HQ
11,12,13 - 1st Batterie
21,22,23 - 2nd Batterie
31, 32, 33 - 3rd Batterie

OR is it:

10 - Sturmartillerie batterie HQ
11,21,31 - 1st Batterie
12,22,32 - 2nd Batterie
13, 23, 33 - 3rd Batterie

OR

1 - Sturmartillerie batterie HQ
1,2,3 - 1st Batterie
4,5,6 - 2nd Batterie
7, 8, 9 - 3rd Batterie???

Any thoughts appc.

I've looked through the books I've got and they all seem to gloss over that topic. I did find that during that period the most common format was to give each gun a letter designation. The reason being that they were considered part of the artillery and so adopted the common practice for the artillery of assigning a single letter (A,B,C,...) to each gun in the platoon or battery. Later when the StuG were absorbed into the panzerwaffe, they adopted the three digit numbering system for the panzers. But I do see many pictures with the two digit number as you have stated, and I would think the first number would be the battery and the second would be the gun in the battery. But I can't find irrefutable proof.
