Hey everyone-
A Couple friends of mine and I are planning to start a little campaign of 70s-80s cold war scenarios in germany. I looked at the modern GHQ rules and saw that these do not include rules for Denmark and the Netherlands? Is this right or are they inbedded within other NATO nations forces? Also, how would you use these forces in a campaign? We're trying to make the campaign interesting so its not just a USA vs. Warsaw Pact tank slugfest.

Hey,
I was in the 3/64th 71-75. We were on maneuvers with the Dutch and Belgium army for about a month in 1972. This was against "Die Bundeswehr". It seems that at that time you can attach just about any NATO units together. The only problem would be logistics in some form. We did get our fuel from the Dutch,but they can keep their goulash!
BTW Die Bundeswehr clocked our clocks all the time! Nasty ol' Leos! grumble grumble Damn rigam rakkers *#@*!

I've been running a Jutland campaign with a group of guys in northern Virginia for the last few months. Its set in 1988, so a bit later than you may be looking. While it doesn't involve the dutch, it does involve just about everyone else on the NATO side, plus Soviets, Poles and East Germans. There is a write-up from the first battle on my website (www.microarmormayhem.com), with two more to follow shortly. I also have a number of shots of Danish units, including custom-built M-41DK recon tanks.

The theatre really offers a lot of possibilities -- A Germand PzG div, plus Territorials by the thousands and corps troops, Danish mech units and territorials, US Marines, UK armor and motor inf in Saxons, US Army National Guard (81st Mech Brigade, maybe), 9th Motor Inf was tasked to the theater, plus many other potential units (UK paras, US air assault, etc). Lots of fun, and gets away from the M1 v T-80 slugfest.

So far, we've fought out three battles on Jutland pitting USMC units duking it out with a pair of Soviet divisions, and one (was really split into two) featuring Danes against Polish Paras and Marines. West Germans v Soviets looks to be next on tap.

I was with the 2AD (Fwd) in Garlstedt in the late 80s and we routinely trained with the Dutch, Belgians, Brits, Danes and of course Germans. My experience there suggests several possible scenarios:

1. Protecting the POMCUS sites on the Dutch/German border against airborne attack
2. Defending Bremen/Bremerhaven/Hamburg against an amphibious/airborne attack
3. Counterattacking WP penetrations in the BOAR sector. (Of course the Brits never felt this was a plausible scenario.)
4. Holding the Danish Peninsula

In all of these scenarios, our NATO Allies would have the bulk of the combat power.

Your suggestions are great! That Jutland scenario looks like fun. Sorry for the short reply, I'm on my vacation!

My big problem now is finding rulesets that contain all of the NATO countries.

This was an old set of basic rules which I seem to recall had all those countries for that time period..

Fulcrum, I have used Combined Arms, and modified some of the rules for 1 to 1. Seems to go smoothly.

For the Duch, the YPR-765, take some of those 25mm turrets out and replace them with machine gun turrets from M113A3 from GHQ or M113 machine gunners from the other guys. I also, have snipped off the TOW launcher and place an M-2 .50cal machine gun in the hole. I have a bunch this way. Can also utilize turret from M-163 20mm AA. Although, really for South Korea.

I've done a lot of conversions for Dutch and Belgian vehicles

This is the 12.7mm version (actually the Belgian variant, but basically the same)



The conversions are really simple, and just require wire, tinfoil and such that you are like to have sitting around the house.

Haven't done a lot on the site lately, been spending most of my time working on the yards, hanging out with the kids, and training for a marathon. Damn shame when real life gets in the way of your hobbies...

Upcoming additions are going to be more on the ISM models, a couple more campaign write ups, and (eventually) a piece on vintage GHQ stuff...

sorry I havn't been posting thanks on my own thread, i've been traveling a bit.

Pat- those are some excellent conversions. I envy your painting skill! Thanks for all of the information from everyone.

PS I visited the Aberdeen proving grounds and got quite a few pics while i was traveling around, although a lot of the equipment there is being renovated, though several pieces are now in tip-top shape. If you ever are in Maryland, be sure to visit Aberdeen! Its def worth the trip!
