Recently I was looking up the units that fought at Stalingrad 42-43. While going through the German 3rd Inf (Mot), I discovered that in it's OB was the 103rd Pz Bn. All I could get from it was 1 Medium company and 2 light companies.
Would anybody know more about this unit?

On June 28, 1942, the inventory fo the 103rd Panzer Battalion consisted of 10 PzMk II, 35 PzMk III (50 lg), 8 PzMk IV (lg), and 1 Cmd. This according to Nafziger's OB, Panzers and Artillery of WW2, page 262. Doesn't have the breakdown for each company.

JB, what do you want to know? Tank strength at a particular date? If so, when?

JB... also found this out for you in HEIMDAL - Panzertruppen.
-Pz.Abt.103 :
5 avril 1942, anéantie à Stalingrad, reconstituée le
11 février 1943 et attribuée à la 3. Inf.Div. (mot).
5 April 1942, totally lost at Stalingrad, reactivated on
11 February 1943 and allocated to 3. Inf.Div, (mot.).
Not much again, but thought that you would want to see dates.

I found a handful of pics in the Panzer Colors books of 1st Company. It shows them equipped with PzIIIL, winter whitewash over gray, company commanders' tank numbered 100 in small black numerals, division insignia on forward turret side in red.
Hope this is helpful.
regards,
Steve

Well jb, it was activated on 05APR42, and was previously III./Pz.Rgt.18 (18PD). At the time of the Russian counteroffensive, it had 7 x IV & 22 x III remaining. There is a book of the unit called "3.Infanterie-Division" prepared by veterans in 1960. All records of the divison's participation in the Sep-Nov battles in the city were destroyed. The unit is mentioned in the 6th Army records which did survive and can be ordered from the National Archives or viewed at the Bundesarchiv in Freiburg. 6th Army situation maps depict the division & the 103rd deployments in this time period. Available in mediocre quality microfiche from NARA, but the color originals are again in the BA-Freiburg, which is a lovely city to visit.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I don't know why but this seems to be an obsession with me when I get some different info on units at Stalingrad

It's quiet understandable. It was a very important battle, most of the documentation was either destroyed or hidden, and nearly every important book on the subject has not been published in English. It's quite frustrating.

Bejart, does your Nafziger book mention if the 3rd had a Selp Propelled AT battery? Perhaps with Marders?

Mark ---
Nafziger has 2 companies of 6 75mm Pak 40's in each, probably Marder III M's, in the 3rd Pzjager Bn.
You had me wondering about this as well.
