WW2 British Armoured Cars

Post by dougeagle »

I've been finalizing my 1940 British force and was looking at using an Armoured Car Squadron for recon purposes. In the GHQ WW2 book, page 82, it shows the Armoured Car Squadron as having 6x Rolls Royce and 1x Dingo.

What type of AC is the Royce and GHQ make it?
If not, what would be a good substitute for it?

Thanks guys,
Doug

Hello,

Nothing looking even remotely like the Rolls by GHQ yet, but if you are looking at the 1940 French campaign change the A/C type, the Rolls never went to France.

You might try another manufacturer, but quality is bound to be a disapointment.

The Rolls Royce looks much like a 1914 touring car with armour bolted on and a turret added for good measure, there are some great images on the Bovington Tank Museum site and Wikipedia is sure to have an article for such a long lived war machine.

The Rolls Royce was only used for Home Defence and by the RAF in the Middle East and North Africa.

In France the Morris CS9 and the Guy were used.

The Morris looks a little like the Marmon Herrington (squinting helps) and the Guy is a close match for the Humber (Humber was a development of Guy so the Guy should be an easy conversion).

Well thank you very much. I appreciate it.
I did a bit of research, after reading the reply, on the Humber and the Dingo. The Humber entered service in 1940- 41, with a few going with the BEF. The Dingo entered service before the Humber and a few more than the Humber were sent with the BEF. Thus I have decided to go with the Dingo for the Armoured Car Squadron.

Thanks again :D

WW 2 British Armored Cars

Everyone -The Rolls Royce and the Morris Armored Cars were only used in the very first part of the war. Both were conversions of civilian vehicles; and of limited combat effectiveness in gaming terms. That aside, they were standard equipment for the British Army, and the Rolls Royce Armored Car is just such a cool looking vehicle. I have some that I bought from one of the 'other guys' for my North African games.
As John1911 says, the models aren't GHQ quality, but they fill in a niche. If we're going to do historical games, we ought to have the models as accurate as availability and budget allow.
