Six pounder tow?

Post by LightningLewis »

What did the British use to tow the 6 pounder AT gun around 1944?

Thanks for the help!

I too would buy many many Lloyd Carriers if they were available - but alas.

What's the matter with what GHQ supplies with the AT Gun?

I've seen pictures of AT guns towed behind jeeps and many of the small trucks in both the UK lines and the US line used by both armies. In the book I just purchases there are 6 Pounders being towed by captured Italian trucks. I am guessing it depended on what was available when the guns needed to move.

My biggest gripe is that you get one almost unuseable sculpt and the extra trucks, which take up valuable space in a blister pack. I would rather be able to buy the "deployed" guns in packs of 5 or 4, sans transport. After a while, you have more trucks than you can deploy, so you don't really need the trucks that come in the blister. Also, I have never seen anyone swap out limbered and deployed versions of a gun in the middle of a game.
I wish I had something witty to say...

Pitfall,

Our gaming group uses a deployed stand, and a moving (towed) stand where the transport is removable. Perhaps it is just the way we look at our games and simulations, as not being complete without both versions.

And before you go complaining that the tank transport can't hold the M-1 we've had to go with what we have since no one makes the modern transporter...

If you will notice the trailer you can see it has its own base separate from the cab so that the tractor is multi-purpose from a gaming standpoint. We do the same thing with our towed artillery and AT guns allowing the towing vehicle to be used for other purposes. It only takes a little road colored painted support block to keep the gun or trailer looking like it is properly attached to the transport.

For 'on-table' artillery we always use tractors (Universal Carriers in the case of the 6pdr) and towed guns before swapping for the deployed gun once they're in position. But the CMPs in the pack are fine for infantry brigades.

With 'off table artillery' (which those are does depend on the rules used, of course) it's not uncommon to wind up with a lot of tractors. But then if it's off table, do you need a lot? I've got a couple of M-46s representing the whole battery. Admittedly, having 24 guns lined up along your table edge does look impressive. It's a pity GHQ don't do what's done with the Long Toms, one pack with prime movers and guns and one with just guns. But that's life.
