Well this is my 1st attempt and boy did I learn some lessons, trying to paint them like I paint 20mm scale stuff didnt work for me.

The base is a bit naff, I wanted a Berlin rubble scene, which I wasnt happy with so went back to an earth / dirt effect, so now it doesnt look right, I will pull them off at some point and match them with the next ones.

The vehicles themselves have been painted about 3 times with various layers of pigment that I didnt always remove before repainting... I would of shaded and highlighted them more but im a bit fed up with these 5 now

Anyway everyone has to learn at some point, hopefully the next lot will be better, cos im not very happy with these at the moment, and the rubbish photo doesnt help..

The pieces themselves are lovely casts and I have to admit im very impressed with the quality.

I concur with the Northman. Most military vehicles only have perfect paint jobs if they leave the factory that way or they've just been painted for the victory parade. The problem with rubble bases or details on the model is the dreaded 'scale effect'. A brick, a rivet, or a radio aerial in actual 285th scale is just too small for most people over the age of twenty to see clearly. I would suggest mixing light grey and dark grey railroad ballast for the bases. Experiment with the mix until you get something that you think looks right.

I add dry-brushed matt black around all the gun barrels as well, but each to his own.

Nice set of armor - what I like most, aside from the great handpainted air recognition markings and unit numbers, is the incredible color of the paintjob. It looks 'right'. What shade/brand are you using?

My only critique is the lack of depth shading. The models look like they need a dark wash (prior to the highlighting).

All in all you should be happy with them - they are beauts!

If that is your ide of 'bad' Ace, then your worst is infinetly better than my 'best'. I can't wait to see what you think is your 'best'. They are pretty damn good looking, but I do concur, a little blackwash and we got a winner. Otherwise...wanna paint mine?

I'm a big fan of hand-painted details. I like the recognition markings, and I am particularly impressed by the vehicle numbers on the turret-sides. Very impressive for someone who has a long history painting micro-armor, much less for a first timer! Any tips on your technique?

As to suggestions/critiques, the only one that comes to my mind is ... why did you only paint FIVE? T-34s look much better by the score! Twenty, forty, sixty of 'em and we'd be talking about a respectable job!

I think your T-34/85's are gorgeous!! I've thought about doing some Russian aerial recognition markings myself... but my hand is nowhere near steady enough to do hand-painted markings. Did you consider using decals for your stripes? That is the "route" I've been thinking about; what is "putting me off" is the "fiddely-bits" of cutting the stripes to the right length... I think I've got stripes of the right width, from a sheet I bought several years ago for my HO scale model railroading.

Oh, and by the way... please post more pictures!!!
