Problems getting posts to "take"

Post by 1ComOpsCtr »

Has anyone else had difficulties getting your posts to actually "post". Lately I have been getting the "invalid entry" message a lot when I try to post plus occasionally I have been asked to log on again after which my entry is gone unless I had the good sense to copy it before I attempted to submit it...

The other day I put together a complicated post with pictures, links, etc., for the civilians thread and was dumped as soon as I hit the "submit" button even though I was logged in. After all the work of gathering and posting I gave up in disgust and have not made the effort again though I have made some smaller less complicated posts since...

I've querried "management" with the response "it must be your computer" and I just want to know if any one else is having difficulty since I do not have trouble with any other forum that uses the same basic foremat as GHQ.

For a while I was having to log in often, even though my system showed the GHQ cookie remained within my system... this morning I tried to enter a post 10 times, got dumped, signed on again, tried to repost (because I had a copy) several more times until it finally "took". Frustrating...

Anyone else experienceing the same frustration...?

You may recall the troubles we had with recurrent SQL errors on this forum over the past year or so.

It may well be that there is another such problem underlying the forum. Or, as some have suggested, it may be something wrong with your machine. Or your ISP, or your ISP connection. Could be many things.

The better you can describe the failure mode, the better the chances of finding the source of the error.

Please try to capture more information on the failure. A description should include when the failure occured (time of day), how the failure appears to you (was there a time lag ... "I hit SUBMIT, and after 2 minutes it returned a failure" vs. "I hit SUBMIT and was immediately dumped to the log-in page"), and MOST IMPORTANTLY any error message or code, excatly as it appears on your screen ("I received the following error message: 'SQL ERROR Your request could not be processed due to an error in the database. Error Code VS3321' ")

That same statement holds true for other posters as well. If it is one guy, it is more likely in his machine or ISP. If it is several, it may be ISP or ISP service-type related. If it is several from different ISPs and different service types, then we presume the problem lies in the forum software. So if we can draw a pattern of the failures, we can triangulate in on the error.

I will volunteer to be the collecting point for failure descriptions. Please, everyone, use the PM facility to forward your error cases to me. I will forward them to GHQ, look for the pattersn, and work with them to resolve the failures if/as possible.

We seem to have chased away the SQerL. There may yet be other forum pests to be banished.

We are sorry whenever anyone has a problem using our forum, wherever the problem may be. If someone has a problem posting on our forum, then there is a good chance that everyone else is missing out on some useful information or an insightful opinion. With that being said, we regularly receive e-mails that say "Your forum isn't working..." We try to work with people when we receive these e-mails to find out what the problem may be. Although we acknowledge that there have been some technical problems on our forum that have arisen over the years(it is almost impossible to never have an issue with this type of thing), generally there is no issue with the forum and the problem lies within the users system, connection, ISP, etc. Often times we are able to help diagnose the problem and we receive a "thank you" e-mail. Sometimes we can't diagnose the problem, but as long as messages continue to be posted and we don't hear from any other users, there is a good chance that the issue does not lie within our forum. If you ever have a problem with our forum and receive an error message, please copy, paste, and send it to us. That is the absolutely most helpful thing that you can do. We can then forward that to our website developers and they will very likely be able to diagnose exactly what the problem is very quickly.

If you ever do experience a problem with our forum, and e-mail us then you are likely to receive a reply that says something along these lines:

We are sorry to hear that you are having problems with our forum. Sometimes
things happen, and the only way that we know about the problem is when a
user tells us. At this time we have not heard from anyone else who is
experiencing any problems with the forum. Have you received any error
messages? If so, copying, pasting, and sending the exact message to us is a
great help in diagnosing the situation. Also, there may have been a
temporary technical problem, or it is possible that the problem may be with
your system, connection, ISP, etc. Over the years we have heard from a lot
of people who have had problems logging on, or posting messages. Very few
times has there ever been a problem with the forum itself. Many times we
have heard back from people who said that they diagnosed the problem and it
was something within their system, connection, ISP, etc. Please let us know
if you ever receive an error message, or continue to experience problems.

Thank you for your support,
GHQ

Thanks for copying and pasting the error. It is extremely helpful to have that information when diagnosing a problem. We have notified our website developers, and they have told us that the problem is fixed. In the future, the best way to send it to us is in an e-mail versus posting it here on the forum, but the main thing is that we were able to get the information, send it to our website developers, and they were able to fix it quickly. This forum works, and is a valuable tool, because of the great registered members that we have here!

Thank you for your support,

It did it again today. I entered the site at about 9:10 and went to make a post. It asked me to log in, which I did and checked the remember me box. I put together my entry and went to preview it... went right to log in again, which I did, and it went to a new posting, completely eliminating the work I had done (with pictures) prior to that point. Fortunately I had copied the entry to do a spell check by copying to e-mail so I had the whole post, which I posted, previewed, and entered successfully at about 9:25.

Came to this thread to make a note...

9:32 invalid session. Please resubmit
9:33 same
9:34 same

Took at 9:34, came back to see if it would take an edit...

9:35 invalid session. Please resubmit

Will
