Terrain Rules Question

Post by lead_and_brush »

Maybe this will be cleared up when I get the complete Micro Armor rules, but I'm an impatient soul. I have some woods that are 4x6' that could contain six stands (leaving room for the trees). I have no doubt the front row of tanks could shoot and be shot, but what about the tanks in back, that are behind two inches of woods? Are they blocked?

Also, what about building complexes? I have made a nice village and a manor farm from some of the excellent paper downloads online. I treat the "village" as area terrain and ignore the little buildings themselves. Is this right?

I have some bocage terrain that one, two or three stands can fit into. I treat it as Rough Terrain 3 -- sound about right? Does not block line of sight for tanks>

Do people usually take a hard approach to terrain or do the rules expect players to make the best sense out of their own table top?

I am really liking my tanks and have substantial reinforcements on the way. It is just so great to be able to set up a miniatures geme in the same space or less as a board game!

The way I have played it the tank in the front line could fire out, but have to be at the edge of the tree line in order for this too work. If there are tanks in the rear of the front rank, then they would not be able to fire due too them been to far into the woods to see out of, thus they would be blocked.
This would also be the same as if the tanks were in open ground. If there was a platoon behind another platoon, they would not be able to fire straight ahead due too the front platoon blocking their view. If the rear platoon can see the enemy without have LOS blocked, and within range, then it can fire.

Something like this I would probably say yes, depending on how thick the bocage is. Otherwise, you could treat it as Rough Terrain 1 or Grove. For blocking LOS, if the bocage is higher than the tank itself, then it would block LOS for both defender and attacker. However, if the turret is only visible, then use the Grove Terrain Effect as it states that it gives 'Concealing Terrain' which is +2 if Personnel or +1 Otherwise for the Cohesion Rolls.

Everyone that I have played against, whether Flames of War or micro armour gaming of sorts, are pretty good when it comes too terrain. Usually, it's discussed before the game starts as too what conceals and what blocks LOS. Its mainly common sense on the players part. If an edge of a tree line is in the way, your shot is blocked, doesn't matter if you can see the front fender of the vehicle. Shots don't curve, not like a baseball. Basically its..."Can I see it," look from the miniature point of view, "No, tree in the way, no shot...CRAP!, I was hoping my Tiger could wipe out that T-34."
This is where a laser pointer or piece of string works well.

Hope this helps out,
Doug
