Anyone play SciFi with their GHQ?

Hi Guys:

I've been working for a while on a set of SciFi rules with a Hammer's Slammers/OGRE feel. But one of the games I want to run would be either a "Japanese monster flick" using my WW2 American micro-armor against the alien mega-tank or else some moderns as the good guys. So it occurred to me some of the gamers here may use their GHQ stuff for non-historical games as well.

At present the rules are in play test. They are fast and furious and the current version is hex based, so perfect for those of you who use the GHW Hex-maker system. If anyone is interested in a free set you can e-mail me for a copy of the PDF: mark at scalecreep dot com

Cheers.

A few years ago I was asked(ordered?) to run a miniatures game at a local science fiction convention. I wasn't sure why the game room organizer wanted historical games, but I got to attend for free if I ran a game, so OK. The scenario was a 'what if' the British had objected to the Italian invasion of Ethiopia. Game date was October 31st, 1938. Location: the Libyan Egyptian border. The players were individually told that there had been explosions to the south and that bad atmospherics were interfering with radio communications.
The players spent the first few turns learning their tanks were basically immune to each other, so started to hunt their opponent's infantry. That's when the boilers on stilts arrived. The British and Italians put aside their national differences to take on the invaders. The invaders poison gas wasn't too useful because the humans kept moving, but the fire weapon proved fairly useful as long as the tripods survived.
Everybody had a good time, and maybe I helped convince the sci fi types that not all historical gamers are rivet counters.

Sci-fi Micro Armor

Several years ago, a guy named Mark Faircloth ran several games, including a campaign game using the rules of Dirtside. If you liked Space Marines, Eldar, BattleTech or GHQ micro armor,... all worked for Dirtside.

One time used the Maltise Falcon?? model from Star Wars that was about a foot across, and it could land 6 vehicles (or something like that) at a time. Had smaller transports for infantry and powered infantry could drop from space ship.... I brought everything in first turn including the Falcon loaded up. We had not found nor knocked out any of the AA/anti landers lasers. It was destroyed with all my stuff in it. That surprised Mark, GM, but I was to be there firstest with the mostest...he figured we would assault with everything else until we had knocked out 1-2-3 of the AA lasers. Fortunately, I had enough infantry, powered and otherwise with heavy weapons to succeed.

In a campaign game, the strategic game was played using a 'Risk' board, with the 'aliens' attacking.

Hope these comments are helpful or entertaining in some way.

Sci Fi with GHQ mini's

Everyone - I thought of another sci fi game we played with GHQ mini's. We used GDW's 'Striker' rule set with 1980's Soviets defending against an early star faring invasion force.
The invaders advantages were :
Anti gravity vehicles - very fast
Good radio jammers
Anti laser smoke launchers

The Soviets advantages were :
Numbers
Best equipment Soviet state could provide T-72s or T-64s, BTR -60s
Knowledge they were defending the Soviet way of life

I don't remember all the details of the game ( it was a long time ago) but I remember the aliens eventually won a pyrrhic victory. They eventually used their range advantage to lay back and pick off the Soviets.
Some of the lessons learned:
Just because you can move fast, you don't have to move fast every turn.
Platoon fire can work once - twice if you're lucky.
It's hard to jam a wire guided ATGM.
Smoke doesn't have any effect on a 125mm round once it's left the tube.
The SPG 9 can cover the Sagger's dead zone. A personal favorite, it's the only time I can remember successfully using the lowly SPG 9 in a game.
Technological inferiority inhales vacumn, if your opponents know how to use their advantages.
The game was a ot of fun, although designing the vehicles for the game system was a lot of work. Our group eventually settled on Dirtside for large scale sci fi ground games.

One question for everyone : who hasn't had your micro armor take on Godzilla?

I must admit, I have found myself time after time pitting my micro armor against my godzilla's. When i was little i bought a set from Bandhi i believe that had all of the Godzilla Monsters in it. The best part is they are really to scale! :D So i set up the following scenario-
The end of WWII in Europe. On VE Day during the parade of the victorous nations, the monsters arrive. The US Pershing's are totally destroyed. So what does everyone do? THEY RE ARM GERMANY. The US Adopts all of the German late-war equipment and manfactures them in the US of A. so Basically i had the following (btw all nations fought on one front!!!)-
Heavy Tanks-
Maus, E-100, Tiger II, Tiger I, M26 Pershing, JS-11's, JS-111's, KV's of all marks, Churchill's, Centurion's.

Mediums- T-34's, Shermans, Pz IV's of all marks, Comets.

Light- m24 Chaffee, Pz III's of all marks.

SPG- Jagdtiger, Jagd panther, Jagdpanzer IV, Stug's!!! M36, Su-100, su-152, su-122, Katyusha, Nashorn, Elefant, Marders, Sturmtigers, Brummbar's, M12, M40, Hummel, Wespe, Karl Morsers, and a whole bunch more!!!!

These were the most efffective weapons against them.
The battle was valiant, and eventually the allied forces of Germany, the US, the UK, and the USSR destroyed all 40 of the monsters. (With catastrophic losses as a reminder!)

So i have played with my godzillas :D

Perhaps some pictures are in order...
