Hey gang,

What colors would be suitable for the Chieftain and M47, M60 tanks that Iran used in the Iraq/Iran war?

I don't know what the REAL colors were, but mine are just kind of a generic deserty drabbish color, more drab that desert.

A site with photos. Dust seems to be more obvious than any scheme the vehicles might be wearing.

Per that last link, I always considered the Iranian vehicle color to be a sort of light grayish-sand color. I recall a number of 70's / 80's magazines showing equipment as painted by the (UK) manufacturer, prior to shipment.

Thanks guys. From what I have seen it looks like that they were a desert sand color while the Iraqi equipment is a light sand with some green or brown camo.

I think the color varied depending on the terrain where the tank was deployed. Plus you add in weathering and color variations can get pretty extreme. Terrain varied along the front from desert to marsh to temperate mountains with snow cover in the winter.

Iranian Armor in Iraq

While deployed to Iraq in 2006 I was on an Iraqi FOB in eastern Diyala Province, which would have been near the Central Front of the Iraq-Iran war. The Iraqi base was littered with a tank graveyard of captured Iranian M47 and Chieftain tanks. After 20+ years they still had Iranian colored markings and were a very light sand color much like the near white M47 in the earlier photos. Great photo posts. Thanks

Don't forget sun bleaching. Iranian armor sitting in a depot for 15 years would fade to a much lighter shade than they were painted.
