Tim,

Etched Brass is one option, although depending on how much you need it could get pricey unless you're doing it yourself. Here's one example:

The cross hatching is 3/64" which in scale would be something like 13". Large pattern chain link to be sure but it would at least be representative of what you're trying to achieve. I'm not sure if there is anything smaller out there.

There is a poster, SFC Gregg? who built a prison camp that had fences which looked pretty good. it was under the show me your stuff thread.

I apologize if I credited the fences to the wrong person, but I am too busy to dig through the whole thread.

A super-cheap and somewhat good looking source is the brass screen you can get from hardware places for putting in the bottom of fuel funnels to keep crude out. They are cheap and come in different sizes.

What d'ya need chain-link for?

I have managed to collect a fair amount of screen-door material for this purpose (making fences). Haven't actually tried it yet, but IIRC that was the material used in the prison camp terrain described above, and it looked pretty good to me at that time.

I am going with nylon screen, rather than aluminum (or brass, as Ritter has suggested). Very easy to work with -- cut it with scissors or a blade without any complications. Plyable, although the less pliable metallic materials may in the end be better for the task (as they may make a sharp corner stay sharper).

All you have to do is re-screen a couple of the doors or windows in your home. Guaranteed to please the spouse AND generate enough tailings for all your micro-armor needs!

Yes the Screen door...a great source of modelling material!

The metal screen - as opposed to the nylon type- may be better as it holds shape better but may squish if leaned on by your...er...average gamer. I would think that if turned so that the squares are diamonds, the nylon screen would look very good for 6mm chainlink.

I would think the screen would work better as camo netting. Take some brouwn green and dark grey yarn and threat it in curvy paterns.

I agree the metallic would hold the lay out better. May bend some sections that will permanently be corner sections. Glue it to aome "post" material and mount it on very thin styrene sheets.

Just some ideas.

Actually, I'm making a major push to re-do my 6mm terrain. My moderns games are set in my fictional campaign setting "Afraqistan". So, think "third-world towns" on an island off the horn of Africa.

I'll be building modular set-pieces of built-up residential and business areas, factory parks, farms, an airport, a sea port, etc., and all would benefit from chainlink fences (many of which are very rusty and with holes cut in them by bandits or smashed by AFVs plowing into them!).

Any ideas on telephone poles?

Railroad track? (which scale is best?)

If you're doing third world then I think you could do telephone poles yourself. Use a bras rod or lengt of plastic rod for the pole then attach a simple cross piece near the top. If its third world quality doesn't have to be top notch.

For RR track I would suggest Z scale. There are plenty of model railroad options available with both tracks on a raised bed and just tracks. I have some resin casting molds of Z scale tracks that works okay for me. Ebay once in a while has some resin RR tracks that are supposed to be true 6mm but I don't know the company and I can't vouch for the quality.

For railroad tracks, I'd suggest Z scale Peco flextrack. Comes in 3 foot sections and can easily be cut and shaped to any course. It's 1:220 rather than microarmor or similar which is 1:285 or 1:300, but I find the effect is very close (I do eastern front, so for me it's russian wide gauge

).
