Paint Question

I use Vallejo colors pretty much exclusivley with the exception of a few Tamiya colors and Im wondering if anyone out there knows what color would be the closest Vallejo color to use for the base green in modern West german armored forces. I know tamiya has a NATO green that is a real good color, but my local hobby store is out of NATO Green and wont order more for a few weeks. And as I have pretty much the entire Vallejo line, was hoping to use the paints I already have than having to wait.

any advise or suggestions? Thanks!

by 'base' green, do you mean the green color of the 3 color NATOflage scheme?

yes..I know of GW paints but I refuse to use them. The pigments are some of the worst out there and the paints are just of cheap quality. and as far as extensive line-Vallejo runs about 3 to 4 times the colors GW has....Ill stick with Vallejo thank you.

DrBig
yes...the green base of the 3 tone NATO colors. I should have made it clearer=)

Steelwhip --

I only have perhaps a dozen Vallejo colors, but nothing I've seen to match NATO green. I've tried a bunch of different ones, and nothing really compares to Tamiya -- its about the only color (other than flesh) I'll use of theirs.

While Vallejo is fantastic paint, I've found that their color descriptions are often way off from what the actual color is. Its useful paint because of the excellent pigmentation, but you have to purchase a fair bit to figure out what everything is.

A note about the Tamiya NATO Green -- it looks like they may have a new formulation out, one that is significantly brighter green. I bought two bottles over the last month (from different shops), and they are both different than the earlier bottles. They were light enough that I didn't have to add any white to the base color to bring it to micro scale.

Good luck

I don't have the Tamiya color, but I do have a real RAL 6031 Bronzegruen Bundeswehr chip, and at 1:1 scale, Vallejo's 894 (Russian Green) & 975 (Military Green) are very close. For micro, 823 (Luftwaffe Cam. Green) is the same hue & chroma as the 6031, but a bit brighter...so it would be a good choice for a scaled 6031.

yeah..thats what I was running into as well. Just not finding a Vallejo that works for NATO Green. And I feel the pain of purchasing alot of Vallejo paints to get the right shade that Im looking for...one of the reasons that I have about their entire line=). But the paints are relativley inexpensive and last me forever so thats why I like to use them.

Your insight into the new lighter shading of the NATO green from Tamiya is greatley appreciated. Now all I have to do is try and find somwhere near me that stocks Tamiya paints and hope they have NATO green. I was hoping to get my Germans painted up by next week, but things may go on hold for a bit=)

The Vallejo web site lists 894 as the match to XF-67 Nato Green. I usually don't have much faith in conversion charts but I guess I have to bite my tongue in this case :D

Ill go ahead and try a couple test minis and see what color works the best for me and then go from there...

and on a related note-what color would be used for Mordern German Infantry uniforms?

thanks again!

Devin,

Depending on what overall look you wanted to achieve you could probably use 4 or 5 different Vallejo colors for NATO Green. I agree with DrBig that 894 is a good choice. I've also used 897 Bronze Green and 893 US Dark Green in the past for British. Some examples...

US Dark Green Comets in the middle, Bronze Green Centurions on the right.

Bronze Green Saladin (mixed with a little US Dark Green if I recall correctly)

Hope that helps,

Vallejo refractive green works good, and If you have them or can get them, Humbrol 117. Also to make note that Model master medium green is also good. These are of course enamels, but work good for the NATO tri green base.
That Tamiya NATO green is really the best, but I only spray it because I find it really difficult to brush on :x . Have you tried either method with Tamiya?
